[MoE] Formation of the Swiss Confederation

Day 3,525, 04:00 Published in Switzerland Switzerland by Swiss Dep. of Education

Dear Swiss Citizens,

Once a man becomes a king, he's set apart from all other man, Bonaparte said. "I always thought that Alexander the Great's idea of pretending to be descended from a god, was inspired by a sure instinct to real politics." - he added.
But is it so?

Today we present you the roots of the Republic and the formation of the Swiss Confederation.

Old Swiss Confederation has it's roots back around the 1300', it worked with elements of direct democracy based on greek model.

But in 1789, Europe will change forever. The French parliament is recalled after much over 100 years of inactivity, to vote bigger taxes. Despite the king's intentions, the parliament is against him. Things are driven to chaos, on the 14th of July 1789 a mob takes control of Bastille Prison - Absolutism came to an end.

But the worst is yet to come, in 1793 France puts it's own king on trial - Louis the XVIth and his wife are marched to the guillotine. "There's no turning back" - claims Robespierre.

Many revolutionary wars happened on Swiss territory, ending with the battle of Zurich in 1799, and Napoleon's order in 1803 - the foundation of the Napoleonic Swiss Confederation.

Modern Swiss fas founded after 1848, during the massive European Revolutions.

1789, 1804 and 1848 are years in which Europe told "Yes, we will not go quiet in the night, we will not vanish without a fight" (Independence Day movie) 😃 - Europe fought for the Republic.

Note : Before the XIXth century the world was dominated by absolute and constitutional monarchies, today it's dominated by republics that apply same principles as monarchies - debate it 😉

Best Regards,
