[Artela]&[USWP] The Value of People

Day 1,982, 15:20 Published in USA United Kingdom by Artela

This will be the final article in my set of articles about various party-based thoughts. This one is a little more generic, as it seeks to look at what makes a good party.

So, what does make a good party in this game we play? The answer is fairly simple. It’s People. A party is only as good or bad as the sum of its people.

There are many types of people who play eRepublik, but the four most common types in this game are probably the Chessmaster, the Momma Bear, the Troll, and the Zombies

Chessmasters like to control everything and view the game as nothing more than mere mechanics, everyone and everything about the game are merely pieces on a board to be moved about to achieve a goal.

The Momma Bears take the most satisfaction from helping people, especially new players, and guiding and nurturing other players, helping them to grow and achieve their potential.

The Trolls break down into two sub-groups - the srsbsns troll, who likes to disrupt and ruin the game for other players as an ultimate goal, and the notsrsbsns troll, who likes to just have a good deal of fun and not take anything too seriously.

And finally there’s the Zombies. These people log into the game day after day to work/train/fight and either play as two clickers, never discover the joys of the meta game that the other player types thrive in, or are just happy to follow orders and go with the flow.

The thing is though, there is a place for all these player types (except maybe the srsbsns troll who just ruins things for everyone) provided they are mixed together in the right proportions. Get too many Chessmasters in one place and civil war breaks out, get too many Momma Bears in one place and necessary mechanical things don’t get done, too many Zombies in one place and you end up with too little interaction or direction, and too many notsrsbsns trolls all together in one place means that nothing gets done unless it’s for the lulz.

So what is needed is a mix. These groups may not always get along, thinking that the other groups are not concentrating on the right aspects of the game, but in reality you need a good mix of all the types, the mechanicals, the nurturers, those who just want some fun, and yes, even those who just turn up and follow orders.

And what all these people have to remember is, no matter how ‘right’ they feel their way of playing the game is... the other players in the game are also people before anything else. We must none of us ever forget that at the other end of the interwebz sat at another screen typing at another keyboard is another human being. Sometimes it is easy to forget this.

OK, so back to USWP. What does all this mean for my party. Well, it seems that by concentrating on the Chessmaster style players who are good at mechanics and controlling the game, and the Zombies who like to follow such people, we forgot about the other two types of players. We forgot that for a party to flourish it needs to have people who like to mentor and care for other players, and that not everything needs to be all srsbsns all the time.

I am happy to see this begin to change in USWP. I have been witnessing a small revolution in the party with more emphasis starting to be given to the nurturing of up and coming players and on having a little fun with things as well. This needs to continue. We need Momma Bears just as much as we need Chessmasters and Zombies. We also need people who are not all srsbsns all the time to make things fun to encourage others to hang around and join in.

By encouraging player type diversity and cooperation we will help the party to survive and thrive. Through acknowledging our differences and forgetting past grievances caused by friction between player types we will preserve something worth keeping by working together.

And by remembering that at the other end of the interwebz the person at the other screen is a fellow human being and all working together, we will help make USWP a party to be truly proud of again.
