Day 2,092, 01:41 Published in Australia United Kingdom by Salvator3

Thanks for reading the latest edition of Daily Dose - regularly bringing you news from around the world in eRepublik. Our goal is to help regular citizens keep informed and hopefully encourage them to remain active and participate in country and international affairs.

This paper relies heavily on other citizens getting involved to help out. We do have paid reporters to help cover most regions, however we are working on a limited budget so resources are strained. If you are aware of any noteworthy events (either current or upcoming) around the world, then please notify us through this form: http://goo.gl/wnl5Dv. Alternatively you can join us on IRC in #DailyDose (server: irc.rizon.net)

Alternatively, consider making a donation to help us to hire more reporters & cover more world news. Donations can be made here.

World event: National Shield

The national shield is an opportunity to help build cohesion, teamwork and encourage patriotism within countries. During the National Shield, any damage that is dealt will contribute to each players individual scores as well as the the country they had citizenship of when the tournament started and as certain milestones are reached, awards are given out (such as gold, energy bars and higher energy caps.)

This is proving quite successful for a lot of countries around the world, with a plethora of prizes already distributed.

It will be interesting to watch how the next few weeks develop, with countries and citizens having a bit more gold to throw around.

World event: Work Tax

Debate has been fierce over the last few days with the introduction of the work tax. In a nutshell, previously, only employees you paid for were taxed. However, with the new work tax, when a citizen works in their own company they will have to pay a certain amount of tax (1-25% as determined by congress) based on that countries average wage.

One thing most countries can agree on however, is the new work tax is not a good thing for new players. Worldwide, most new players will start by making a larger number of lower quality production facilities and then thin them out to higher qualities as they progress. As the work tax is charged each time you work on a factory, if you have a smaller number of high quality factories (as experienced players do) you will pay less tax.

However, there is light on the horizon. Many countries have planned on using the added tax income to beef up services aimed at helping new players by providing weapons, food and sometimes even currency and hopefully this added interaction will help encourage new players to stay around.

For example, the South African government has created a program encouraging employers to raise their employee wages to 30cc, with the government subsidising 20cc. This initiative will obviously work to raise the minimum wage, further increase work tax while making South Africa a lucrative country to move to.

NaN (Non Aligned Nations)

The alliance NaN has seen a drastic decline in membership lately. Two of the founding members, South Africa and Australia have already left with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt following not too long after.

In an effort to increase unity with the remaining three members, Country President of Philippines has created a basketball tournament (based on real life games) and offering cash prizes.

Argentina & Chile

After a prolonged conflict with neither side claiming full victory, war exhaustion is starting to be felt in both countries. Leaders from both sides are in discussions to potentially enter a Non Aggression Pact. While details haven’t yet been confirmed (although drafts have been proposed) both sides seem optimistic an agreement can be reached after the tournament.

Brazil

Brazil has their forces divided over multiple fronts, some of their own and a number assisting allies Russia & Mexico. All wars seem to be tipped in favour of Brazil and their allies.

Like many countries, Brazil is still deciding what to do with increased revenue from work tax. Initial observations show the government is trying to bring down the value of gold by selling some government assets in order to assist players.

USA

USA’s main focus at the moment is to hold on to whatever territory they can. Since the introduction of the Work Tax, USA has not had a congress and as such cannot lower the default tax rate from 25%. The government has encouraged citizens not to start resistance wars that will give them a border to dangerous enemies. In the meantime, USA is mainly focused on helping their allies, such as Russia in their war against Ukraine.

Latvia

At the start of the National Shield, leaders in Latvia were concerned that with no active wars, the citizens wouldn’t have something to rally behind and thus the benefit from the national shield would not be obtained. They therefore decided to declare war on a weakened Russia, knowing full well a large scale victory would be difficult to obtain but hoping the benefits from the National Shield would compensate.

However, it wasn’t long before a second front was then opened up with Sweden joining to assist Russia and consequently taking regions from Latvia.

Latvia has since been wiped off the map and talks are underway with Russia to possible end the conflict. No confirmation either way has been found.

Austria & Slovenia

Slovenia has recently launched an attack on core Austrian territory which has been a success. This is despite the Slovenian government losing control of a vital Military Unit and attempting to transition members to a new unit. It is quite an opportune time to launch an attack as it’s very common for Austrians to take vacation during this time of year and they are struggling to retain active players.

Belgium & Poland

Both countries have entered a training war to assist each country in making gains from the National Shield tournament. Both countries seem to be strongly encouraging citizens to fight as often as possible with a political party in Poland offering free tanks for votes on particular articles.

Spain & Portugal

Both countries attempted to diplomatically resolve ownership over territory which proved unsuccessful. Spain then moved to take the disputed territory by force and has since set it’s sights onto more territory and is proving successful.

Spain

Internally, Spain’s government has released a number of programs to entertain and help expand Spain’s sphere of influence, many of which offer cash prizes.

Israel & Saudi Arabia

In an effort to help both nations benefit from the National Shield tournament, Israel has entered a training war with Saudi Arabia. The training was has strict rules & both sides seem to be following them.

Turkey

Turkey has mainly been focusing on retaining control of their conquered territories and has been successful in winning a number of resistance wars.

South Africa

For some time, South Africa had a rental agreement with brazil where they paid 20gold for two of their territories. However, resistance has been building as their latest president Léon has decided he wants independence.

After renting territory from Russia for 200g to help ensure they could elect a congress, they launched a war against Brazil to regain their territories. While Brazil was able to wipe South Africa, their allies Argentina, Uruguay & Colombia then stepped in and helped South Africa regain some of the territories.

While things are starting to look up for South Africa, rumours are surfacing that there are certain factions within Serbia who are keenly looking towards South Africa’s resource rich regions.

Australia & Indonesia

The celebration of regaining all Australia’s core regions seems to be slightly premature, with the war starting to tip in Indonesia’s favour with Australia losing multiple of their own regions. Although having to dip quite heavily into savings to fund the war, Australia remains optimistic that with the help of their allies in the alliance TWO they should be able to reclaim their lost regions.

Australia is now facing battles on multiple fronts with a blacklisted player recently gaining entry into the country threatening to do harm.
