This Week in eBelgium, Day 1003

Day 1,003, 13:29 Published in Belgium USA by MaryamQ
My fellow eBelgians,

This week in eBelgium has been very quiet, too quiet for a week in which we have had elections for Party President with some significant changes and an economic decision in Congress that passed with a total of 5 votes. People are leaving the game at a distressing rate even while administrators and some players celebrate day 1000 of the New World. I am tempted to observe that Anne Boleyn also lasted for approximately 1000 days before those who raised her to power brought her down to a humiliating and unpleasant end.

With regard to party presidencies, we have some new faces and some old ones, as well as a change of names for one party. Only one party had a contest. Free Belgium was won by Jorge 44842 with 4 votes to Yopek's 1. This was approximately a 15% turnout for the party membership.

Res Belgica and Belgium for Belgians each had less than 10% turnout. Velitia will continue as president of Belgium for Belgians, having received 16 votes. Res Belgica is now under the leadership of Habraka Abrivianius, who received 7 votes.

The biggest turnout by far was in the Belgian Communist Party, which elected A Vegan with 8 votes, over 36% of members voting.

Finally, what was briefly the Belgian Socialist Party is now the Belgian Autocracy Party, with M. Leviathin as president. He received 5 votes, or approximately 15%.

Congressional halls are so empty that they echo. The most recent vote, to enable the creation or purchase of state raw materials companies, passed with a total of 5 yes, 0 no and 0 abstain. While I was one of those who voted in favor, I have to say this is a shameful turnout (and it is not the first vote to show so little activity). This is a big decision that could have long-term consequences for our economy. It is hard to believe that our elected leaders have so little interest, almost as hard as it is to believe that so few people are interested in being leaders. This being said, I feel it is my duty to run for Congress for a third term. I may not be the most knowledgeable, but at least I show up, vote on every issue, read every debate, and contribute to debate when I feel I have something to say. I do this despite the fact that I have a RL husband, 3 grown children, 5 stepchildren, a grandson, a very frail and elderly mother, a full-time job for which I am on call this week 24/7, community interests in the local mosque and a poetry group, try to stay current on local, national and international events, and am in the midst of observing the month of Ramadan. What's your excuse?

I cannot conclude without observing that media activity is also extremely low in recent days, but not so low that we don't have people sniping at one another. I implore you, if you care about eBelgium at all, to start working to save it. If you have ideas about how to do that, put them out there. If you don't, try to find something to support for those who do. Vote, subscribe, get active in politics, publish your own articles, go to the forums and IRC. If I can do it, surely you can!

What would Aldous do?
