WHPR 1552 - President's Weekend Address: Friends, Allies and Alliances
James S. Brady Press Room
President Oblige speaks directly to the American people.
Dateline: Sunday, February 18, 2012 (Day 1552)
Location: Hot Springs, Arkansas
Today's Agenda: A Few Words
My dear friends,
As you may know, our nation is a member of the TERRA alliance, which works alongside the EDEN alliance to fight our common enemies, the nations of the ONE alliance. There are top level meetings, of each (TERRA and EDEN) alliance and also joint meetings, plus leadership of each alliance frequently attends meetings of the other.
Today I wish to discuss how this works, and why, but let's first tend to a couple of points of business.
EDEN has voted to re-MPP TERRA member Chile. We applaud EDEN members for this vote of confidence, full acceptance of Chile as a full partner in all military strategies and security interests, by the members of EDEN as well as Chile's own TERRA partners.
We also applaud both Bulgaria and Turkey for their continued diligence in working through the issues they have as eNations, and for all members of EDEN for letting cooler heads prevail.
Turkey will continue as a member of EDEN "on a trial basis" as Bulgaria has stepped back from hostile talk to a more accepting position, and it is expected that Turkey will become a full member of EDEN very soon.
I have presented three facts to you:
First, that EDEN and TERRA are both "good guy" alliances.
Second, that a TERRA member has unanimous support of all EDEN countries.
And third, that the ongoing Bulgaria-Turkey saga is coming close to a favorable resolution.
Now let us tie these things together.
At one point the EDEN alliance was fraught with internal bickering between members. Rather than completely disband the alliance, leaving many nations scrambling for support against a unified enemy, a second alliance was formed to co-exist and partner with EDEN. TERRA membership is comprised of many of the former PANAM alliance, along with a few former EDEN members.
The logic is truly simple: some of us just have trouble dealing with each other, but we do have certain common interests, most notably our common enemies. Now we are all, both EDEN and TERRA members, better matched with partners whose interests are most in line with our own.
Chile and Argentina continue to have differences between them. Chile is TERRA, with the added bonus of being fully MPP'd by EDEN. Argentina is considering joining EDEN, and should do so, because Argentina's enemies are the same as EDEN's enemies. By joining EDEN, they won't have to look across the table at every morning meeting and see the face of their neighbor with which they have RL problems. But on the eRep game battlefields, we can see Argentina and all of EDEN joining Chile and all of TERRA, to kick Poland and Serbia and their subservient ONE puppet states straight to hell.
Bulgaria and Turkey have a similar RL issues they bring to the game. They've got history. They've got issues. No one will take anything away from either of them, that these are important in the real world. But this is not the real world, this is a game, and we have the opportunity to sidestep reality to accomplish something that may never be resolved in the real world. We can play together.

"Whether or not intended by its creators, eRepublik is an ongoing social experiment. We all bring something of our real lives to the game. We play more and better with people we like, we tolerate and work with people we don't like but need, and avoid people we think are jerks. I find it curious, though, that we manage to bring RL political and historical hatred to a game where we as individual human beings have the opportunity to transcend that."

President Oblige speaks directly to the American people.
Very well said. It is certainly a shame that countries bring their RL conflicts into the virtual world of eRep. The one advantage to this though is that this website actually provides level ground where the people of these conflicted relationships can talk to each other without the facade of governmental representation debating it instead. Maybe thats looking into it too much, but eRep certainly is worth more than just a game.
HAIL BULGARIA!
Fail Turkey!
Thanks for the explanation.
Mighty Obliged!
"Whether or not intended by its creators, eRepublik is an ongoing social experiment..."
This is certainly what eRepublik Aspired to be initially; promoting teamwork and diplomacy, even creating political parties, contracts between organizations / players, even in-game chat rooms.
However after the 'buyout' at the twilight of V1 this seems to have entirely changed. We no longer have the same user transparency (ex. donations lists) in order to keep tabs on our fellow e-citizens. Heck, with this newest update we can no longer even attempt to gauge who works for whom, etc.
In the spirit of the direction eRep seems to be headed along the next two logical feature removals by admin will most likely be MPP's and possibly Citizenship, the only question in my mind is 'when' and not 'if'.
Good luck, and DioSpeed TEDEN.

Wouldn't the President be talking to the people directly in his own paper?
a president has to be president and talk with the National Country's newspaper,he's not a simple private citizen, who speaks with his own paper. However, hard voted!
So what happens when ONE is out of the picture? Will TERRA and EDEN turn against each other?
and by "good guy" alliance, you mean our guys, right?
Well obviously GLaDOS...
according to this, he may have trouble distinguishing the difference:
