Any classic "Silver Age" / Jack Kirby stuff? Or "Bronze Age" DC or Marvel? This stuff looks mostly like new and/or indie comics. The real gold is from the 60s and 70s, right up to the "antihero" push in the mid-80s.
No sorry!
Yep! Mostly indie and 2000-2010's.
antiheroes are great concepts. but like all great concepts, there are some (or a lot of) not-so-great executions...
For sure. Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is probably the best graphic novel ever made (the sequel, not so much). Wolverine is one of the all-time most popular characters, and I also really used to enjoy the Punisher (particularly the Punisher's War Journal series when it was drawn by Jim Lee; I still have the first 30 or so of those on my shelf somewhere) and the initial "rebirth" of the Ghost Rider (when it was drawn by Mark Texiera). Then everyone wanted to be awesome like Miller and Alan Moore, and "dark and gritty" spread everywhere and became a bit silly, and brought about ridiculous characters like Spawn and Lobo.
I liked that stuff when I was a kid, but now that I'm an adult, the more innocent, unbridled escapist fantasy of the Silver/Bronze age stuff seems a lot more fun. Particularly when it's paired with the visual style of Jack Kirby, who managed to pull off artwork that was at once slightly crude and incredibly dynamic and imaginative.
All the more "realistic" modern comic art, with its Eastern influences and obvious digital techniques, has just lost that heady, visceral feel. The writers seem to have abandoned the classic, mythological "good vs evil" story types in favor of high-minded pop psychology and socio-political commentary. The innocence is gone.
