Top scientists theorize that since we have proof of six inches being more than enough it may very well be that five inches would be enough and do further surmise that four inches would be adequate. They are quick to point out that much research will be needed before they could speculate on anything less than four inches.

In the little known facts category (unless you happen to be a pickle), your standard 32oz canning jar is six and one half inches tall. That would mean that a six inch pickling cucumber is just right for the job.

This coming from an old shrivelled up pickle
Pickles should be crisp and juicy. When they are spongy and yellowish discard them. However, in my case I've become leathery and completely dried out, thus becoming very efficient at plugging a hole while not marring or otherwise damaging the hole being plugged.
