Siguiendo las actividades de integración propuestas por el gobierno, hoy quiero presentarles a todos la mayor fiesta de la ciudad donde vivo, A Coruña (Galiza, España)...para el que no lo sepa, estoy hablando de la noche de San Juan.

Following to the social integration activities proposed by the government, I want to present to you all the biggest celebration in the city where I live, A Coruña (Galiza, Spain)...for those who don't know about it, I'm talking about San Juan's night.

Cualquier noche es buena para arribar a A Coruña. Dice la canción popular que es mejor entrar en A Coruña de noche que en el mismísimo cielo de día. Y es que, cada vez que el nocturno se adueña de la ciudad, proyectando sus sombras sobre plazuelas y evocadores rincones, parece como si el alma coruñesa, ese íntimo espacio de vivencias y recuerdos, se liberase y mostrase todo su esplendor a los ojos de propios y extraños.

Any night is good to arrive at A Coruña. A popular song says it's better to enter in A Coruña at night than to heaven at day. And this's because whenever the night takes over the city, projecting their shadows on squares and evocative places, it seems as if the coruñesa soul, the intimate space of experiences and memories, is freed and recalled all its glory in the eyes of friends and strangers.



Pero si cualquier noche es buena para llegar a la ciudad, la Noche de San Juan, el hito festivo de mayor relevancia de todo el ciclo anual, es sin duda un momento mágico, inigualable, sin parangón posible con cualquier otra noche del año.

But if any night is good to get to town, San Juan's night , the festive milestone of greater relevance throughout the year, is without a doubt a magic momment, unique, unparalleled possible with any other night of the year.


El culto ígneo en la noche solsticial se vive, desde siempre, con intensidad en la ciudad. Calles y plazas rivalizan, con la perspectiva del tiempo como aval, por conseguir la mejor y más alta hoguera de cuantas se queman en esa noche cargada de poético significado. Desde Los Castros a Monte Alto; desde Palavea al Agra do Orzán, pasando por Eiris o por los Mallos, en cualquier esquina de cualquier barrio, se alza una hoguera o simplemente una sardiñada comunal con la que festejar la noche más corta del año que abre la puerta, de par en par, al recién estrenado verano. Lo que realmente importa es reunirse en torno al fuego para festejarlo y rendirle culto ancestral.

The cult of fire in the soltice's night is lived, since always, with intensity in the city. Streets and squares compite to get the best and highest stake of all the ones burned on that night full of poetic meaning. From the Castros to Monte Alto; from Palavea to the Agra do Orzán, passing by Eiris or the Mallos, in any corner of any neighborhood, stands a fire or simply a communal sardine barbacue that celebrate the shortest night of the year that opens the door, wide, to the brand new summer. What really matters is to gather around the fire to celebrate it and ancestral worship.


La Semana de San Juan, previa a la Noche del 23, es un tiempo distinto capaz de evocar estampas casi olvidadas; así, todavía es fácil ver, al caer la tarde, en cualquier barrio, a un grupo de jóvenes correr de un lado a otro transportando un gran tronco, posiblemente sustraído de alguna obra en construcción, que luego ocultarán rodeado del mayor secreto y que finalmente servirá como eje central de la hoguera que plantarán en la plaza o en la encrucijada de calles más próxima a su lugar de residencia.

The week of San Juan, before the night of the 23, is a different time able to evoke prints almost forgotten; Thus, it is still easy to see, at dusk, in any neighborhood, a group of young people running from one side to another carrying a large trunk, possibly stolen from a construction site, hidden then surrounded by the utmost secrecy and that finally will serve as a central axis bonfire they will planted in square or at the crossroads of streets next to their place of residence.



Hecho singular lo constituye, cada 20 de junio, la puntual colocación de la Hoguera de San Juan en el arenal de Riazor. Una gran Hoguera alegórica a cuyo alrededor se satirizan vivencias de las que fue testigo la ciudad a lo largo del último año, convertido todo ello en monumento de cartón piedra que será inmolado en la noche del 23 al 24.

An unique act takes place every June 20, with the placement of the bonfire of San Juan on the beach of Riazor. A large allegorical fire to which is around satirizes experiences which witnessed the city over the past year, made this monument of papier-mâché who will be slain on the night of 23 to 24.




La mañana del 23 de junio amanece, en A Coruña, distinta al resto de los días. Poco a poco comienzan a descubrirse esas claves que encierra en sí todo el entramado festivo. A media mañana, la Meiga Mayor, la Meiga Mayor Infantil y sus respectivas Meigas de Honor desfilan, en una comitiva colorista, formando una estampa evocadora de otra época, por las principales calles de la ciudad hasta la parte antigua para encender el mágico fuego de San Juan.

The morning of 23 June sunrise, in A Coruña, is different from the rest of the days. By midmorning, the Greater Meiga, the Child Greater Meiga and their respective witches of Honor parade, in a procession of colourful, forming an evocative picture of another era, through the main streets of the city to the old part to the magic fire of San Juan.


El atardecer comienza a inundarse con el peculiar olor a sardina asada. A la puerta de cualquier bar o de cualquier comunidad de vecinos, se prepara una parrilla donde asar tan delicioso pescado propio de este mes del año. "Por San Xoán a sardiña molla o pan", dice el refrán popular en clara alusión a que este manjar marino está su mejor momento de comida.

The evening begins to flood with the peculiar smell of grilled sardines. At the door of any bar or any community of neighbors, a grill is prepared where people can roaste this delicious fish of this month of the year.



La noche va, poco a poco, cayendo sobre la ciudad y con las primeras sombras una riada de jóvenes comienzan su peregrinar hacía las playas de Riazor y Orzán portando cajas viejas y maderos. Como de la nada, en el amplio arenal formado por las dos playas, al pie de la gran hoguera, se van formando pequeñas piras de madera y cartón, listas para ser quemadas.

The night goes, little by little, falling over the city and with the first shadows a flood of young people begin their journey towards the beaches of Riazor and Orzán carrying old boxes and lumber. Out of nowhere, in the broad sand formed by two beaches, at the foot of the great fire, small bonfires of wood and cardboard, ready to be burned are forming.


Falta poco ya para las doce, la hora mágica por antonomasia. Las pequeñas hogueras de la playa comienzan a encenderse una a una; pronto los dos grandes arenales formarán una especie de rosario ígneo que reflejará sus llamas en las tranquilas aguas de la ensenada coruñesa. Será entonces cuando la ciudad entera, volcada hacía su mar, entone una especie de sinfonía en fuego mayor.

It's almost 12 p.m , the magic hour par excellence. The small beach bonfires begin to ignite one by one; soon the two large sandy areas will form a kind of igneous rosario that reflect its flames in the calm waters of A Coruña. It will be then when the city whole, overturned to sea, tone a sort of symphony in a major fire.


No será difícil, en ese instante, ver a más de uno cumplir el rito purificador del baño de las nueve olas en las calmadas aguas de Riazor, otro de los tradicionales elementos en esta simpar celebración.

It won't be hard, at that moment, to see more than one meet the purifying rite of the bathroom of the nine waves in the calm waters of Riazor, another traditional element in this celebration.


Las doce en punto. Miles de personas abarrotan la playa de Riazor. El fuego de las decenas de pequeñas hogueras se proyecta, iluminando la noche solsticial, confiriéndole un aspecto mágico, casi fantasmal. Una carcasa de fuegos artificiales disparados desde la Rotonda, visten de gala multicolor el cielo del recién estrenado verano coruñés.

Twelve o'clock. Thousands of people crammed the Riazor beach. Dozens of small fires fire is projected, illuminating the June night, giving it a magical, almost ghostly appearance. A fireworks fired from the Rotunda, dress the sky into multicolour clothes, celebrating the arrival of summer.




A partir de aquí, la fiesta se vive en la calle con la gran verbena de San Juan; en la playa donde los más jóvenes continúan hasta el amanecer, quizás con el fin de ver "bailar el sol" o simplemente para dar cumplida cuenta de otros ritos, relacionados con la fecundidad, propios de esta Noche; los múltiples pubs y cafeterías del Paseo Marítimo y alrededores se convierten en obligado punto de cita para aquellos que desean prolongar la fiesta.

From here, the party is live on the street with the great festival of San Juan; on the beach where teens continue until dawn, perhaps in order to see "dancing Sun" or simply to give accomplished account of other rites, related to fertility, own this evening; multiple pubs and cafés on the promenade and surroundings become obligated meeting point for those who wish to prolong the party.


Entretanto, en las calmadas aguas de Riazor y el Orzán, sirenas, nereidas y tritones, entonan su mágica sinfonía de fuego y agua.
