The social identity theory states that people form there own social groups and show favouritism to members of there groups, and, in turn, discriminate against other social groups and members outside of theirs.

With the establishment of alliances, eRepublik players are split into 2 different social groups: "Them" and "Us". Players who identify themselves in one alliance, show favouritism to others in their alliance, and discriminate to members in the other alliance, in some shape or form.
