Democracy Under Threat
Colin Fox
Look back in history to recall the numerous excuses dictators used to seize power from the people and suspend democracy. The fallacy of "we might as well as a domestic dictator than a foreign one" is so far off the logic tree. The question here lies in our values...
Obviously anyone who values freedom and democracy is against the Dictatorship. Anyone who wants to keep Congress relevant in-game will surely be against the Dictatorship. Let's say the dictatorship turns out to not be what we want but one group holds considerably more power in their MU? What then? Not only this but there is a huge incentive to not give up power, Dictators earn a considerable amount of gold each month they stay in power.
We have friends and allies from around the world that would come to our aid if we were ever under threat of foreign PTO. Have we forgotten this? I would rather keep eIreland free and democratic than in the hands of a SINGLE player's will. I'd rather fight off a foreign dictator than have to play some meta-game on a Forum that isn't part of IN-GAME mechanics.
Smaller parties, why support this? This would render you voiceless, especially if you lack any sort of MU. This is another attack on grassroots parties which will make them powerless to more larger parties with organized MU's.
Which brings me to the question of how we're going to transfer CP's into Dictators each term. Say the Dictator goes rogue (which CP's have been known to do) and doesn't want to give up power? Say this Dictator commands one of the top MU's and within those short few hours which you can liberate they coordinate a solid defense. Not only is that a waste of a lot of money, but it makes it that much harder to replace them! Don says we will simply just switch MU Commanders but what if the CP doesn't want to leave their MU? Also *should* the CP always have to be the Commander of the state MU? This adds a whole load of extra powers and responsibilities that weren't inherent in the CP position. Before they acted as Commander in Chief with only a few buttons (natural enemy, declare war) but now they will have to make sure to operate and manage the entire state MU! Wow, so demand more time from ordinary players who don't spend all day on eRep but want to be CP...well heh no point in running anymore!
Once we install a Dictator there will be no returning to our beloved Republic. We will be in a constant limbo of switching Regimes, role-playing struggles, the CP position will never entail what it used to. This decision is forever, not a temporary solution to the fears of a power hungry minority. If we continue with this path then just let me tell say for future reference: I told you so.
We must not rush into this without considerable thought. Personally I don't feel comfortable giving that sort of power to any individual, including anyone in the ILP and myself. Be critical, don't be fear-mongered into supporting a proposal that will degrade the political aspect of this game into mere meta-game pretend Forum politics.

"We declare in the words of the Irish Republican Proclamation the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies to be indefeasible, and in the language of our first President. Pádraíg Mac Phiarais, we declare that the Nation's sovereignty extends not only to all men and women of the Nation, but to all its material possessions, the Nation's soil and all its resources, all the wealth and all the wealth-producing processes within the Nation, and with him we reaffirm that all right to private property must be subordinated to the public right and welfare." ~ Democratic Programme of the First Dail
We're onto you, we're organizing, you'll be hearing from us!

What do we have to gain by giving all our power to one person?
Chris, I suggest you read the update and Don Croata's well written articles discussing the mechanics (and RTK for a dissenting view believe it or not). Unfortunately Colin's article is lip service and hot air as usual. He doesn't understand the dynamics of the game and plays solely from a contrarian viewpoint. He opposes whomever is is power and considers himself professionally oppressed. You'd be well served to not to drink from his well. It's tainted and sour.
As a matter of fact, I did read Dons article, and RtK's, and several others, in addition to writing my own.

D-Tom's posts negative comments in every article of mine, fancies himself a Chihuahua barking for his masters. You're nowhere near the troll level of Padraig or Hank, why do you try so hard mate?
Colin, the way you pretend to play the game so VERY seriously bores the hell out of me. It does now and it did in each of your other failed personas as well. If you spent as much time trying to better the eCountry rather than stroking your fragile ego with "WE are watching" and "You'll be hearings from US!" Then perhaps your articles might break out of the 5 vote / 3 comment rut (that's when they aren't banned or deleted by you in embarrassment). Who exactly is "Us" by the way? So far all the support you seem to have is WHS. It's boring. It's contrary. You provide nothing forward the discussion. You're static during a symphony. Dissonance for the sake of your own zeal. Meh. Change your name again and stop acting like a constantly petulant child.
Remember when Colin was a President?
It was a sad day for democracy.
Your mouth are full of democracy, while your actions looks incapable.
there is a logic fail in the pro dictatorship campaign. irish army would due to game mechanics be the ones defending the revolution by the dissenting citizen if they instituted the dictator.
hence logically they must be supporting party in establishing dictator and we must create a "dictator" army if we want to do this. a 1 man army that cant defend a revolution.
this is purely on a game mechanics issue.
