Hello Ireland. As many of you know, recently a major change has come to the worl😛 the possibility for the creation of dictatorships. The dictators that rule them, installed by means of a military coup d'etat, have absolute power over the nations they control, rendering their Congress and President powerless. In order to remove the dictator from power, the nation they rule must undergo a violent and expensive revolution, shelling out 200,000 IEP (or whatever their local currency) for a mere chance at freedom. And yet, many nations, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, have willingly given power to such rulers. Even more startling, there are those within our nation that would wish to do the same.

A Look at the Past
In the spring of 2013, our government was, in essence, powerless. Our territory was occupied by the British, and we were kept under their control by Spain, Poland, and Serbia. With no territory, any Congress we elected had no power whatsoever, and our President had very little that he could actually do. For months, we fought our way out of that situation, and were finally rewarded with our freedom after a major battle in Dublin, in which soldiers from many nations took part. During this time, our Congress was powerless. And now, if certain members of our nation have their way, it will be once again. We spent months and huge amounts of money and supplies fighting for a Congress less than two years ago, and now we're preparing to willingly return to not having one. Which leads me to wonder... would things really be that much better than if we were simply conquered by another nation once more?

Ireland Under a Dictatorship
Under the system proposed by supporters of a possible dictatorship, things would operate in roughly this way. Following the overthrow of our current democratic government, a dictator would be elected by the people, much as our current president is. After some time, we'd simply elect another, and the first would give up their power willingly. The same would occur if the dictator were to do something that would warrant impeachment, were they the president. This would prevent foreign citizens from coming to our nation and forming their own dictatorships. Sounds like a great idea, right?

Wrong.

It isn't hard to see the errors in this system. First off, the whole purpose of putting a dictator into power would be to prevent another dictator from coming into power. That's roughly as logical as breaking a man's leg so that another person can't. But hey, at least it was broken by somebody he liked. Moving on from that, this would make our Congress completely and totally powerless, defeating the whole purpose of having one in the first place. This means that this dictator could make decisions without the approval of the people, and there would be nothing we could do to stop them. And what if, when an election comes, they refuse to give up their power? Or if they disappear, whether from computer issues, to vacation, to general inactivity? Our government would come to a screeching halt, and we'd have to either wait for their return or spend tens of thousands in order to overthrow them.

In Summary
People of Ireland, together we are strong, and with our allies alongside us we are nearly unstoppable. This is our nation, and any foreign dictator who tries to rule over us will find nothing but resistance. Putting our own dictator in power is far from a solution, and will only serve to destroy democracy. Do not allow yourselves to succumb to fear, and let an absolute ruler wrest control of Ireland from the people. The same goes for all nations of the worl😛 resist dictators, and protect democracy.
