Hello my fellow countryman. o/ Mon independence.
I'm Scottish and live in Scotland but I won't be voting yes this year. I'd want devo-max though.
Wouldn't we all like some devo-max but that isn't promised after the independence vote. The vote is either "yes" or "no" and unfortunately we are not guaranteed any additional powers after the referendum. We may not even get extended powers till many years from now, when in 2020 we are expected to have 50% of our children grow up in poverty.
I'm for radical independence because I believe that we are strong enough, smart enough, and have the bravery to better not only our citizens but our future citizens as well. I'm sick of being unrepresented in Westminster and for 55 years we've voted anti-Tory yet we've been ruled by Tories!
I think enough is enough, my father and grandfather have fought the long struggle for a fairer society in Scotland. I believe this is our chance.
There was nothing stopping the SNP government from proposing a Devomax question separately in the referendum. If you want incompetence, look towards the Scottish government first. I dislike the British government as much as any other university student in the middle of a working class city - Dundee - but that doesn't mean my opinion is based on the crappiness of our governments right now. At some point in the future, we will be independent but rushing it because we dislike the current government isn't the way to go. Afterall, I'd rather wait until the results of next year's British general election before deciding if my passionate dislike of a Tory government will change my mind on Indyref.
I doubt the SNP would be the governing party post-referendum, it would probably be up to a general election and we all know what parties would get voted in. 😉
I understand your position, I am just prepared to take this leap. We might become independent in the future, but that is uncertain. How many people need to fall victim to poverty by the Westminster's neoliberal policies before we say enough is enough? Also, I would like to keep our universities tuition-free, not privatize the RM, and reap the benefits of our wealth instead of the majority of it going to London. We have our own problems that will only be solved by the Scottish people, with powers only possible under a free independent government.
Scotland would be fine on it's own. Hell, even the Scandinavian countries are open to helping and having us as one of them. What would we get with the UK? Poverty, laws/rules/taxes we do not want. Once we get independence, we'd have the choice of selecting any party/person in Scotland to lead us into the future. It's not just 'Alex Salmond or Cameron' as so many people try to make it seem. Our ancestors died for the right of us to rule ourselves independently, and all we've manage to do in return is remain in the UK, then bitch and moan about it and allow ourselves to be lied to over and over until we repeat the same mistake again. It's sickening. No one has ever gained their independence and wanted to give it back. Why would we?
So the support for independence is based on the fact that we were at one point independent, despite the Scottish (not English) monarchy, forming what we now call Great Britain?
While we're on the topic of ancestors, Scotland was fortunate to be a large part of the British empire. Scotland's economy boomed from pre-union perpetual decline to pre-industrial era success. The fact that Scotland's current economy is reliant on London isn't taken into account by most people is laughable at best. We'd lose the pound because the English want to spite us if we become independent. We'd lose membership of the EU, because the Spanish want to veto us. Meaning no Euro. Tell me what currency we would have? We'd lose a permanent seat on the security council in the UN. We'd lose out on a High Speed rail network spanning Britain. Our economy would be reliant on North Sea oil that /will/ run out. As far as I'm concerned, the future looks bleak because people would vote yes for the sole purpose that we were "once independent, so we should be independent again".
For the record, I'm not apprehensive about the idea of independence, I'm just apprehensive about it happening in 2015.
Independence is overrated.
imo it's the English that should be seeking to escape the union and go independent.
How does Scotland intend to continue to provide free university education, free school meals, free public transport and free prescriptions without English Subsidy's?
Ha. Lol. Somebody needs to look up the facts.
Vote YES for scottish independence. Please FFS vote YES
