[MMOG] Massively multiplayer online games
New Faustian Man
Does anyone make games like Erepublik anymore, that are slightly/considerably better and have half a million users or more..?
Or is this literally it for text-based MMOGs, the end of the line once Erepublik closes it's doors? No one will bother making any more of them and they'll go the way of the Dodo bird like netbooks or Windows 98...
Thoughts?

There are still some but they're all shite
Thing is, why would u still want to play this anyway? If it wasnt for the time already invested I would have stopped already...
People don't complain about this game based on the underlying concept, most users dissatisfaction with this site is with the shit changes to the game admin's introduced. A MMOG done correctly, by a competent group of people, surely there would be hope for a game like this then...?
I would complain.
Concept of countries - good
Political module - good
Social module - good
Economical module - could be better but good
Training module - good
Actual gameplay - shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
Pvp -this aint 1990 brah!
It's a blog. I like it. I mainly use it for trolling and social interaction.
Have a great weekend... and try being less of a trash NFM! o7
Horses for courses ofc, but...
"I mainly use it for trolling and social interaction."
There are superior sites for both those things. People often justify why they continue to play this game by quoting something they get out of it that's fairly low on the scale of what this game is supposed to offer. Yeah I know it's sold as a "social game", but when people continue to play based only on that element of play and are using the site just so they can communicate with other people, with 60% or w/e of ingame conversations about how crap the game is and how retarded the admins are for pushing the kind of changes they've implemented through the years, and continue to implement....well, that just kinda reads like a fat fail by the admins imo.
The point of the article is does a game based on this concept [text-based MMOG etc.] have any future? The fact Erep still exists suggests it's still making a profit, and this DESPITE the terrible way its run, which also indicates games like this have something going for them...
My conversations don't revolve around that and I don't care what others think. I think it's a pretty cool game. Have no idea if it has any future. Depends if they invest into advertising or not.
after the demise of the human species eRepublik will continue to be played by the soon to emerge AI
I've probably brought it up in the past, but I'll bring it up again. I like the concept described in REAMDE by Neal Stephenson with the game T'Rain.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reamde
Specifically that "T'Rain is a fantasy-themed virtual world with an extensive mythological backstory, incorporating an economic system intentionally geared towards meeting the needs of conventional players as well as gold farmers, who specialize in converting in-game currency to actual hard currency."
Once eRepublik Labs started limiting peoples' desire to farm gold with the maximum daily donation of 10 old, the game started going to crap. As has been illustrated repeatedly in history, "Prohibition" never works.
A better resolution would have been to find a way to make gold farming work within the game and still be able to collect revenue. This could have been accomplished by looking at long term vs. short term goals or coming up with an additional purchasable item (e.g., Platinum, Diamonds, etc.) that would provide freemium benefits but wouldn't be essential to playing the game. The trick would be having that additional purchasable item not throw the game out of balance but provide the player with some unique benefits not available to others.
What you describe is a game like this done properly, but most of the recent attempts at text-based MMOGs have eventually went the Erep-route of pay-to-play, or more specifically pay-to-win, so there doesn't seem anything on the horizon that could upgrade a game like this, just more attempts by people to make a quick buck.
Votado OME!!!
It's a shame, unfortunately. Thing is nodoby gives a fuck about users, it's all about money and that's it. Ofc this is a business, but a business is a two way street, it's not only about getting more and more money without taking care of your users.
eR is dead, they will close the door once the visas stop buying gold, and it's gonne be earlier than later.
