Comrades & Collogues

Its Congress Election time again.

The Independent Labour Party brings stability and mature debate in Congress a point even our opposition admits.

I ask you to vote ILP in this election.

I present here the list and you will see there are a lot of good people there along with some new players. Please note a low position on the list is not a reflection on the people there. Someone had to be last and activity is a major decider.

I ask you to vote for eIreland, VOTE ILP

And now a little bit of History,

The International Labour Organization is an arm of the United Nations.

Did you know the Irish connection in its formation?

Edward Phelan a fellow Waterford man was the forth director of the ILO

It is due to his leadership that the right to organise is enshrined in UN conventions.

"His successor, Ireland's Edward Phelan, had helped to write the 1919 Constitution and played an important role once again during the Philadelphia meeting of the International Labour Conference, in the midst of the Second World War, attended by representatives of governments, employers and workers from 41 countries. The delegates adopted the Declaration of Philadelphia, annexed to the Constitution, still constitutes the Charter of the aims and objectives of the ILO. In 1946, the ILO became a specialized agency of the newly formed United Nations. And, in 1948, still during the period of Phelan's leadership, the International Labour Conference adopted Convention No. 87 on freedom of association and the right to organize."

I would also like to mention The Word in my article.

Until next time
