Comrades & Collogues

Since the last CP election the ILP Leadership Board have been looking at how we select or support candidates for Country President.

We have spent a lot of time on this and take the task very seriously.

We first looked within our Party for suitable people willing to stand. As no candidate was made known to us we then looked at the candidates from other Parties.

With a lot of Candidates now listed we feel it is important to now inform our members the outcome of these deliberations.

We have decided NOT to endorse a candidate this election cycle and we give ILP members an open vote.

We do ask that ILP look closely at the candidates and question them and be satisfied where you place your trust.

Note to candidates...this decision is final so please do not ask for endorsements..We, the ILP Leadership Board, wish all candidates the best of luck and ask them to run their campaigns in a spirit of national peace and good will.

And now a little bit of History,

100 years ago this year the Dublin Lockout begun.

With a basis in trying to improve the terrible conditions in the Dublin slums. In an attempt to improve wages and working conditions Unions were formed and the workers joined them. This was bitterly opposed by the capitalists who threatened them with the sack unless they left the union.
They refused. When the workers went out on strike they were sacked and locked out of their jobs.

Please read up on this part of Irish Labour history which partly in turn lead to the events of 1916.

Until next time

I would also like to mention The Word in my article.
