[Congress] I'm running for Speaker

Day 2,342, 14:42 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Addaway

Greetings eUK,

This month, Congress has sunk to new lows of inactivity, arguing and inaction. What little constructive discussion has taken place has been quickly overrun by petty tantrums and bickering from Congressmen. In my Congress message, one Congressman has been outright abusive towards other members of congress, and at one point used homophobic language; with no consequences as of yet for his actions.

Outside of this, every change that was brought into Congress during my term as Speaker has been totally abandoned, which I firmly believe is partially to blame for Congress’s inability to discuss anything for more than five minutes; Congress has largely behaved as a disorderly rabble this month, not as a governing body of the eUK. Organisation and structured debate are what is needed in Congress, and that has been totally lacking this month.

So, I will be running for Speaker on the 26th, providing I am elected to Congress again on the 25th of this month. I know that I had to pull out of this months election; this was due to unexpected mock exams at college which meant I didn’t have time for eRep for a week or two at the start of this month; this are now finished. This coming Congress term however, I will be highly active once again; most of my time will be spent at my laptop revising for exams, and I will be on eRep at the same time.

So, if I’m Speaker again; what will I actually do?

1. Re-introduce and develop the Committee System: Unlike last term, I will have all three policy committees operational within the first few days of being Speaker. Each will select a chair; who make public reports on what their committee has been discussing, perhaps weekly.

2. Re-introduce Congress IRC Meetings: If you were in Congress during my first term as Speaker you will remember that twice a week we had a Congress chat about topics of the day, and questions to Government ministers, and discussion about how to improve things. You can find an example of what was discussed in this article. These will come back and be twice a week again, one on a weeknight and one on a weekend evening.

The meetings will be just like this; except it will be on IRC. And there will hopefully be less jeering.

3. Congressional Standards Committee: I had a basic version of this running in the last week of my last term, but it’s essential functions will be these:

1. Oversee Citizenship Applications
2. Hold Congressmen to account for their behaviour and actions in Congress,
3. Hold the Speaker to account for his behaviour and actions in Congress.

If you want more information on the Policy and Standards Committees, read this article from my last term: http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/-congress-speaker-039-s-report-3-2384521/1/20

It will be made up of one senior representative from each top-5 party appointed by their PP, plus the Speaker. Obviously, when the committee is judging the Speaker’s actions, he has no vote. FAR more detail will be given on this committee will be given as and when I’m elected as Speaker.

Essentially, I’m going to bring back everything that has been thrown in the bin this month, and then build on top of it to make a more effective Congress. A Congress that gets things done, and doesn't spend its time bickering with itself. We have a job to do Congress, let’s set about actually doing it.

Tl😉r

-Congress Committees will come back
-Congress IRC meetings will come back
-I will be active, and ensure ordered and constructive debates in Congress

Cheers,
