War: The Ugly Reality

The truth about war

The players on both sides enjoy playing the war module. We're playing to win, and we're playing because we love the game. Losing is frustrating, but it makes winning later even more fun.

Could the eUK have driven EDEN out? If every battle were perfectly timed, and perfectly planned, Phoenix's many MPPs would outdamage the EDEN forces in the eUK. People make mistakes, though, and the Headless Chicken takes its toll.

Could EDEN have taken London? If the entire alliance were committed and ready to exploit the eUK's very first mistake, EDEN had slightly greater reserves and income, and could have occupied London on the second or third try.

The truth about cash

Both sides are flat broke, and can't afford the war any more. A few truly talented players can accumulate wealth, but that wealth comes from players (like me) who are less savvy. Those talented players sometimes forget that they're a small minority, and not everyone has the gold to invest in a massive military campaign.

Like many, I bought war bonds. I also looked at the total investment and cost of those bonds. Nearly half of the Type B bonds were in the hands of three orgs. The total investment is 2010 gold from Type B bonds, and an undisclosed sum (which looks like about 4-5x that much, from donation records) in Type A bonds. That's on the close order of 10,000 gold.

It cost 1,300 gold just to *open* the battle in London. Assuming we provided 10 Q1 weapons for each of approximately 1,000 soldiers (1,000 gold right there), and 10 health packs to each of our top 10 tanks (another 200 gold), expenses could quickly top 3,000 gold.

Did we equip 1,000 soldiers? Did 10 tanks buy 10 packs each? That question is *way* over my pay grade, but I think my Fermi-esque estimate is very low. The cost of continuing the war, and ultimately capturing London, would likely have been several times what the eUS Treasury took in from those war bonds.

The war module was designed as a final resting place for gold. War is where we bury the wealth of nations. Find ye peace, my shiny tokens.
