The Economist ~ The cost of audacity
Spite313
Dear friends,
In the past few weeks all of TWO has fought yet another balkans war. This time the Croatians broke free, and along with regional allies managed to stir up a whole boatload of trouble. Their freedom and fighting meant that Bulgaria escaped to Scandinavia, demolishing our ACT allies and directly threatening the UK. Romania had to chase them to stop them. Serbia lost all her empire again, and as a result France is about to attack the UK. That one well timed revolt has damaged half a dozen ACT countries, and weakened Serbia for another few weeks until they recover.
The thing is, this isn’t the first time. CoT is a lot weaker than TWO (combined, about half the strength, not counting proTWO countries) and it’s only advantage lies in well co-ordinated resistance wars and surgical strikes on bonus corridors. Now, American bluster aside, there have been few major victories for CoT. But those that have happened- Hungary losing out on most of it’s empire (which was pretty inevitable considering the balance of power between Hungary and the countries it was holding down), Serbia being repeatedly driven to it’s home regions - have all had one major source.
Just like in the days where they were based in Mexico, Croatia’s position in India, alongside that of BiH and Albania, allows it to strike at the core of TWO without TWO being able to easily attack back. What makes this worse is that TWO has known about this for months- years even. Ever since Croatia first moved into India, the attitude has been “good riddance”. The theory being that in India we only have to put up with intermittent resistance wars rather than constant war. Serbia can hold Croatia, Bosnia and Albania down (just), but if it does it can’t hold anything else, so no Empire.
This painful logic has led to Croatia acting unchecked for all this time. They can attack with confidence knowing that Serbia will not attack back, because irritating as it is to be totally powerless, it would be a Pyrrhic victory to drive them out of India. If you read the Serbian media, there were calls to punish Albania and BiH for their part in the revolt against Serbia, but very little mention of Croatia. There’s no call for an airstrike even - the RWs against BiH have been done by Serbian mobile battalions, which is by far our weakest form of attack as an alliance. It is because people have become comfortable with the status quo.
The current President of Croatia has been a friend of mine since before the dawn of time, but I have to say: this must end if TWO is to regain control of it’s own future. Right now the whole schedule is being dictated by Croatia and CoT. The neutral countries and CoT might not be firm allies, but neither do they like TWO. And their co-ordinated strikes on TWO are making us the defender- not a position TWO adopts easily. We are an attacking alliance, and on the defensive we show our weaknesses.
Throwing Croatia and it’s allies out of India won’t give us any economic benefit, but it’ll put us in control of the initiative. I don’t expect people to agree with me- the fact the map is the way it is shows that most leaders in TWO feel that a Croatia in India is still a safer option. But I don’t want a safe option, I want an option where TWO can return fire when it’s attacked. Where maintaining bonus corridors isn’t set above actual fighting. Where avoiding major battles and fighting to the death in minor RWs isn’t the norm. I don’t want to see 70%+ overhit walls in resistance wars anymore. It seems like since the rise of TWO the world has been quietly divided. NAPs respected by only one side have been quietly acknowledged. We’ve forgotten what we started out to do - conquer our enemies. Now we’re an army of diplomats and our only focus is to keep the map exactly as it is now.
Don’t let CoT and company hold the initiative. That’s our job.
Iain
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

well written, but I doubt anyone over TWO would risk resources over strategy. i.e. poland wont make a move for india nor will serbia. then who else would? as you said, people are happy with the way things are in TWO

Iain, I love you, but please dear...
"But I don’t want a safe option, I want an option where TWO can return fire when it’s attacked. Where maintaining bonus corridors isn’t set above actual fighting. And yet:
Allied with Serbia - Check
Allied with Poland - Check
If you truly want what you say you want, try living outside of the major damagehood for once. I promise you that it will be refreshing... at first. Then, as with everything in this game, it will soon feel as yawningly hopeless as everything else.
The balance of power is just a result of the people with their hands on the scales. ONE was defeated many times. TWO could be as well. I'm not going to cripple my alliance just to balance power against those who can't organise theirs properly.
Who said anything about balance? It's about perspective. As long as you stand in the shadow of the two major European power hourses, where everything will always be about the production bonuses, you will play not play the second fiddle but I guess that in case you're lucky, you could be the janitor who mops the floor after the concert.
I can see the pros and cons of both situations though. Being stuck in a never ending battle against impossible odds isn't much fun either compared to being stuck in a never ending battle about the same thing as last year, and the year before that, and...
The sad truth is that a poorly designed game will always end up like this, with players banding together in huge alliances. Players who long for a more innovative, unexpected - and to me - more fun style of gameplay will be discouraged and leave. Why you and I are still here, no one knows. I guess we just happened to float by in a time where this game had more to offer and when the community was more sparkling.
My previous comment was not about balancing things at all. Which side Iain and UK is on doesn't matter one tiny bit. The cards have already been dealt. But when you claim to want things that you can not find inside TWO, it is a bit ironic to bash your head against the wall when you could simply just try to turn the knob and walk through the door instead.
And in case anyone's wondering:
Powerhourse - a certain kind of mobile Polish dwelling, usually driven by the aid of a really powerful breed of Slavic horses.
I don't think you understand my/our role in two, so that didn't really make much sense.
Apart from me thinking that it's a dumb idea to enter a Threepwoodish pissing contest with a grumpy scotsman at 3am on a tuesday morning, I must add that I think you misinterpret the silver lining in my initial reply. But since you brought it up, I doubt that it would cripple TWO if you were to take a month off and explore those aspects of the game that you called out for in your article. It was a piece of friendly advice, but I apologize at it was obviously unwanted.
You're probably right about me not understanding your role in it too. Seeing as you are to intertwined by now and my feelings towards alliances (as a concept) clouds my better judgement. I shall leave it be at that. Holla when you're out of the alliance woods and Iain the intellectual cuddlebear is back again. I very much preferred him to the HQ version.
But who knows? The current HQ consists of a few names that might make a difference.
I'm not saying TWO relies on me or the UK to the extent where if we disappeared it would collapse in flames. But we do give a lot to the alliance.
The fact that the UK is in TWO at all means that it isn't all about damage- as well as the 12 smaller countries in ACT.
Sweden herself was a part of ONE, which for all intents and purposes was TWO plus Sweden and MKD.
My objection was that it's a classic excuse to blame losing constantly on the enemy "only caring about damage". The fact the UK is on the map most of the time and Sweden isn't is because of better diplomacy- pure and simple. We haven't "sold ourselves to the damagehood" but we have convinced bigger countries we're worth keeping in the alliance. The Asgard thing was doomed from the start, you didn't need to be a rocket scientist to see that. The only way smaller alliances can function (as ACT did) is by being subsidiaries of a larger alliance. The problem with that is when the larger alliance is under threat, it's smaller members are thrown to the wolves.
So in short:
1. I am not in anyone's shadow.
2. A strong alliance and a good alliance are not mutually exclusive
3. Don't make it sound like joining Asgard was a good decision and you were let down by TWO being an evil alliance full of powerhouses. It was always going to be like that, you know from ONE. Bad decisions bear fruit.
You are forgetting that Serbia is insisting to hold all Croatian and Bosnia&Herzegovina regions, not only the ones needed for 100/100 resources.
This makes it basically not a TWO, but a "Serbian only" problem; they would never act like Spain did recently with Canada. At this moment Slovenia is also harvesting the fruits of Serbian political arrogance - remember their new voting proposal in TWO? And speaking of the recent Hungary events: while they have been loosing region after region, Serbia was preoccupied to get their bonuses back in Italy and France.
But what I really can't understand is that all the TWO members are somehow blind; the fact that 90% of their troubles come from Serbia's attitude and their bully-like behavior towards not only neighboring countries is so obvious.
At the end I have one question for you Ian: what is your mission in China? Are you lobbying to get them more close or even into TWO?
If you can't even spell my name, How am I supposed to take the rest of your analysis seriously? Like I sai😛 American bluster is boring. I'm not sure how many of you really believe it.
China decides on its own. I don't hide my political allegiance but I have no connection to China's parties or congress.
Sorry for misspelling your name; I didn't have my glasses on.
But I'll take your decision to ignore the facts stated in my comment as you not being able to provide a valid response and will conclude that thereby you acknowledge that they are true.
When I talked about bluster I wasn't kidding. "Serbian political arrogance" - citation needed. You mean where they went for 10/10, exactly as the USA did? "not helping allies whilst protecting bonuses" - sound familiar again? USA is famous as the worst ally in the game. Even CoT don't like you. And as for bullying behaviour, USA are the masters of that. Fact is, strip your rhetoric back and what do you end up with? Get rid of the pretty emotive words and just look at political reality.
- Serbia wants 10/10
- Serbia is by far the most powerful country in the world. That is not arrogance, that is reality.
- Hungary didn't lose regions because of Serbia doing anything, they lost regions because of Ukraine and CoT acting against what was at the time the weakest of the three global empires. Arguing differently is pointless, since Hungary, Serbia and CoT have all said so.
sorry to bash in but i see this:
"Serbian political arrogance" - citation needed. You mean where they went for 10/10, exactly as the USA did? "not helping allies whilst protecting bonuses" - sound familiar again? USA is famous as the worst ally in the game
If Serbia does "exactly as the USA did", "not helping allies whlist protecting bonuses" like USA. That means Serbia is like USA. Just because a country from CoT has quite the same mentality as serbia does not deny the fact that it can be like valiant thor said , it is a "Serbian only" problem. Basically you are saying Serbia's actions are exactly like the US's. Since USA is worst ally of the game, if Serbia is like USA then what exactly are you trying to say?
Numero 2.
He(Valiant Thor) didn't even state that Hungary lost its regions because of Serbia, he simply said that instead of helping Hungary, they were preoccupied to get their bonuses back in Italy and France. Serbian help does not promise that Hungary will stop losing regions, but allies usually tend to help eachother in times of need, rather than trying to get their bonus back.
Avoiding the questions by comparing Serbia to USA is not gonna do anything. You confirmed Serbia's attitude and mentality is similar to that of US, did not deny the fact that 90% of TWO's problems come from Serbian bully-like attitude.
The SG of TWO subliminally saying Serbia is as bad as USA is...you tell me 😃
You are comparing eSpain case with something totally different.
eCanada isn't bordering any country that they could attack and hold while eCroatia can easly attack eSlovenia if eSerbia and eCroatia sign any treaty.
If eSerbia wants to help eSlovenia there is nothing to do expect total occupation.
If there is some other way to sign them it would be done but if eSerbia would request that eSlovenia is left alone by eCroatia then eCroatia would request that eBiH and eAlbania are left alone by eSerbia.
So yeah it isn't same thing as it is with eSpain and eCanada and while you are criticizing of that stance eSerbia has you give no valid option for situation that is on Balkans....
Also don't start with that thing where eSerbia was chasing for resources while eHungary was loosing regions.... It was wrong thing to do but every country did taht at some point of time.
Look at that eCroatia for example that left their allies totally occupied in past while they were fighting not to loose 1 colony in eIndia.....
Again that can be said for every country in this game....
They are not blind. When you got the country with the most damage in erep, in the alliance, what are you going to do? Treat them fairly like a country and be a man stand up for your self/country, instead of turning a blind eye and kissing @$$? Not in here they dont.

well, It is a fruit of unwillingness of serbia (it was rumor afterall, but maybe it is true) to help Indo kick Croatia from Asia almost one year ago.
Lol Hungary lost his Empire because your beloved romanians fight against us and did billions of damage in our RWs. But you as SG of TWO ignored this.
The Hungarian Empire was lost due to overstretching and battles at night .
There were several eRomanian players fighting against Hungary but it happened for Ukraine a country to which eRomania had an MPP at the time .
And BTW there were less Romanian players then they were Hungarian players fighting for Bulgaria 😉
Lol such lies. 5 elit romanian MU put the DO in our RWs and made billions of damage -.- at least admit what you did.
I have said they were several Romanian players ..I do not think there were 5 Elite Romanian MUs .
You have not brought any argument to contradict what I've said and you make me a liar ?
Sad true is that TWO didnt organize propere RW in enemies regions for ages... I think since RWs in Mexico against Croatia.
I totaly agree with You that is time to back Croatians home.... and after that "burn" that home 🙂
What are you waiting for? Yet not enough multies to do the job?
mmmm... yes 🙂
So that after Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Albania leave you may PTO India and create another puppet state of Serbia, like Thailand, New Zealand, UAE...
I agree with you, our priority should be kicking Balkan countries from eIndia.
We only need one successful air strike there and they're toast. 🙂
Could you please order the Romanians or Belarus to do it for you, their air-strikes are much stronk!
