Spanish teachers [a joke...]
Ilene Dover
There have been far too many serious articles lately, and we could all use a good laugh. So, to celebrate Viyoman taking my commission for a personsl newspaper banner (thanks dude, love your work!), I have the best Spanish-English joke I could get ahold of during my lunch break. For any offence I may wind up causing (like Mitsubishi releasing a car called "Pajero"...) I apologise in advance...
A Spanish Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa', while 'Pencil' is masculine: 'el lapiz'.
A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?' Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether 'computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun.
Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.
The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval. And
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine ('el computador'), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

Please edit: "La computadora" y "El computador" instead of "La ordinadora" and "El Ordinador".
Really? Not what I learned years ago...
Really. "El ordenador" is used only at Spain and don't exist "La ordenadora"
Fixed, sorry!! 😶
Perfect!. Great joke.
oops deleted comment 🙁

Only in Spain we say "ordenador", which comes from the french word, in most of Spanish speaking countries they use "computador", taken from the english one.
Very funny 🙂
This originally came out as a French joke, and the. Has been used for a few other languages lol.
I know. 🙂
Joke broken/modified to suit the times.
XD good.
In Spain we usually say "el ordenador" and "el PC" or "el portátil " (the netbook). Also can say "la computadora" or the less used "el computador".
No viste el artículo original que decía "la ordinadora" y el ordinador".
I think the joke works better with South American Spanish, in hindsight.
What would be the feminine version of "el ordenador"?
Computadora se utiliza por analogía con la palabra calculadora. No hay versión femenina para ordenador.
Ni siquiera una pista sobre las posibilidades ?
Computadora = Spanish from South america
Ordenador = Spanish from Spain
Good to see the Atlantic breaks languages other than English.
You can spot American writing from 100 paces if you're not American...
Are you sure about that? 😛. Can't say I've been called out much mate 😛
You're quite good at disguising yourself. 🙂
The giant Oreo stack gave you away, to my eyes at least.
😮 are you calling Americans fat? But nah, I am fat XD
Not at all! Aussies are far too, for the most part.
More that Oreos cost a king's ransom here and nobody in their right mind would break them for shits n giggles.
Oh really? The more you know right
I liked it. That is reality. Girls from venus and men from mars. Very good.
I only came here for the picture
