MI - No Price Too Great

Day 674, 07:47 Published in USA USA by Heather Fuchs

Chapter Six:

While the firefight from Bravo Six raged on at the outskirts of the small compound, Len was the first to slip through the fence around the missile silo. "On your right!" yort54 yelled as two Russians rounded the corner just out of Len's view. All three A3 opened fire with a rapid KACK KACK KACK of gunfire from their automatic rifles. Moving more cautiously now Len couldn't help but think how glad he was Bravo Six was out there taking most of the heat or they would never get this charge placed in time.

Therose was leading her men with a controlled fury that comes from a cool head and a lot of experience in combat. Single word commands kept Stegeman, Eric, and Kulmar moving forward in perfect position to cover each other, do the most damage to the waves of Russian soldiers attacking them, and keep the focus on them instead of the Alpha Three warriors who had a mission that could not fail. They would stand this ground as long as necessary, but there was no shame in the recognition that each of the four hoped it would be over soon.

Len crawled forward with the explosives pack. Finally he could see the designated place on the side of the silo for attachment. He continued his slow crawl toward the target with the roar of the fight off to their left, when from down the stack of 55 gallon drums he had just passed came one short burst from a Russian gun, and Len's ankle was shattered. Before the jerking motion of his leg had even stopped yort54 jumped up and fired two shots into the Russian, and n4n0 crawled ahead to aid Len. After quickly bandaging Len's ankle as best he could with his bum shoulder, he spoke to Len: "Give me the pack... I'll take it from here." Knowing the incredible pain n4n0 was in with his wound didn't slow this soldier down, Len knew better than to argue. He unbuckled the pack, tossing it to n4n0 then rolled over to better position his rifle to cover his friend. yort54 took up a post adjacent, where between them they could easily see any movement within 180 degrees of their target.

Seconds later n4n0 was at the silo, and once again with the distinctive "Click" the explosives were in place. He paused to check the timer to be sure it would sync with the other three.. the small screen blinked on and off several times, then powered on strong. 2:33..... 2:32... They had done it! All four charges were set within 10 minutes of each other, and they even had 2 and a half minutes to get out alive. Honestly that was more than any of them expected.

He turned and as he started running back to his mates he hand signed 2 ½ minutes. yort54 lifted Len to his one good leg as he leaned heavily against him. Without saying a word they each shifted their weapon to the outside hand so Len could lean on yort54, and yort54 could hold him up with one. They made one furious looking killing machine as they moved out to meet Bravo Six, and put as much distance as they could between themselves and this silo.

Like a human pincher the two highly trained MI partial platoons moved together. The Len/yort54 machine double firing into the now frightened Russians, with n4n0 spraying round after round into the enemy using his one good arm. These rolling deliverers of death looked pretty rag tag and bloody, but you couldn't tell that from the way they fought and killed the enemy.

When Bravo Six saw the high sign and knew the mission was a success, they also knew they had only a short stack of moments before the nuclear explosion would begin. But nothing about their safety was as important as getting these A3 soldiers out alive. If the roar from their guns was insane before, it became unreal when they saw their fellow MI on the way out. No Russian had a chance against the morale, training, and firepower of this combined group. Within seconds the entire base was void of life that didn't have a huge MI smile on its face.

Before the dust even began to settle they heard the rattler sound again. "Oh frack I hate to get picked up like this!" Stegeman moaned out loud. "Yeah but better than the alternative of staying here" Eric shot back as he threw the specially crafted MI net out on the ground. Within seconds they were all wrapped together in the center, when maemae broke into view. Expertly piloting that Stratolifter now with the hook trailing out, she knew she had time for one pass if she was going to get them out......
