MI - At the Silos

Day 659, 22:19 Published in USA USA by Heather Fuchs

Chapter Four:

Two Russian sentries stood guard at the outside edge of the compound. n4n0 and yort54 signaled each other silently, and while Len stayed back to watch for other guards, the two men crept up behind the sentries, more invisible than if they were ghosts, and with deadly precision sliced both their throats. All three soldiers sprinted for the opening and were inside the fence.

It was easy to spot the three silos. Tops protruding ominously from the ground, massive cables and monitoring devices trailing out and back to a command shack. And everything covered with patterned netting that made the whole scene blend into the landscape when viewed by observations planes.

Len motioned to the first silo, and then lay in the dirt at the edge of a small storage building. He quickly positioned the Ultra-Distance Sniper Laser, this time dialing it into Silencer mode. n4n0 and yort54 quietly scrambled toward the designated location for the explosives, but found themselves face to face with two more Russian guards. Before they could even react Len had pulled the laser trigger twice and both Russians fell into a pile at their feet. None of them had ever seen a rifle that silent, with that deadly a reach. "Click" the explosive locked into place as all three moved onto the next.

They got to the second silo without event and set the explosive. "This is almost too easy" n4n0 whispered to yort54. "Don't jinx us" was his quiet but terse reply as they scrambled for the third missile. Perhaps he did jinx them, or perhaps they had just used up their luck, but the third silo burst to life as they broke into the opening.

"Forget stealth" their headset radio popped on as Len quickly assessed the situation. "Keep all weapons on silence so we don't draw guards from the other two silos, but it looks like we're going into this one in full attack." As all three highly trained MI opened fire, the zone was filled with death and destruction. Guard after guard dropped where they stood, rarely even getting off a shot.

But the recognizable staccato crack in the air told them instantly there was a Russian Mosin-Nagant 1891-30 Sniper rifle out there somewhere. The high velocity bullet tore through n4n0's arm at the same instant Len found the sniper and placed one laser bullet through his left eye.

yort54 ran to his aid while Len set the third and final charge for this compound. "Frack man, that looks like a nasty hit." "pshhhhhh" was n4n0's response. "My girlfriend scratched me worse than this last weekend." he said as he quickly wrapped the wound to stop the massive bleeding. They both knew there would be serious ramifications from that wound later on, but after the basic first aid was applied, there wasn't anything more they could do about it now.

Len ran up and saw everything had been done that could be done to help n4n0. "Ok honest answer required." Len said seriously as he looked at his slumped friend and fighting buddy. "n4n0 - you feel like moving out with us to the last objective, or you want me to call for an extraction."

n4n0 looked up at Len like he had just asked the most bizarre question in the world. He slowly but as surely as possible raised himself to his feet, used his good arm to strap his weapon back on his pack, and started moving due north out of the compound. "That fourth silo is 2 clicks away ladies, and we have less than 10 minutes to set the charge. If you're going to keep up with me you better get off your butts and get moving."

At a time like this all that MI training was just second nature. Of course these three soldiers were going to finish their mission... or die trying.
