Citizenship Limits and Asylum - Ideas To Change The Game

Day 2,820, 11:17 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by HebronGazelle

So I read an article a few days ago about how eRepublik is losing players, and I replied with a random idea that the admins could implement into the game. I didn't think about it at the time but today the idea came back to me. It is either a brilliant idea or a horrible one but I am just going to type out some ideas into an article for people to agree with or scrutinise.

Population Limits

Each country can only hold so many citizens, simple enough. Like in real life, only so many people can actually stay in one area before it is full and nobody can come in. My idea was that each country is given an initial 'citizenship percentage limit' which is the percentage of the worlds population which can have citizenship in that country. For example if a country has a 2% limit their population can be up to 2% of the worlds population. Each country would have a 1.5% percentage limit, plus an extra 0.25% for each region they hold (up to a maximum of 10 regions). This means all countries will have a citizenship percentage limit of between 1.5% and 4%.

As I write this, the current world population works out as 76,444. 1.5% of this figure is 1147. 21 out of 74 countries are over this figure. 4% of this figure is 3058 which 5 countries are over. Many countries will have limits between 1.5% and 4% which is what we should really be concerned about.

Countries Over 2% Limit: Serbia, Brazil, Poland, Argentina, Ukraine, Hungary, Turkey, Romania, USA, Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Chile, Croatia, Russia, Georgia, France, Republic of Macedonia, Italy, Mexico, Indonesia

Countries Over 4% Limit: Serbia, Brazil, Poland, Argentina, Ukraine

Countries Over Their Own Limit: Serbia, Brazil, Poland, Argentina, Ukraine, Turkey, Greece, Georgia, Mexico, Indonesia

10 countries out of the 74 in this game would be over their citizenship percentage limit.

Gaining New Citizenship

Some countries will be crowded and players will have to leave their country to find a place to live. Their are several cases where players will have to find a new country to live, I'll look at them below.

New players. New players will not be able to join a country that is full. Instead they should get a warning when they try to join in that country, and will not be allowed to join there. They can pick any other country which has space for them.

Players wanting to move there. Players looking to change citizenship will not be able to attempt to get citizenship there, which is easy to stop. They can look elsewhere however.

When a country loses some of it's citizenship percentage limit due to losing regions. When a region is lost there is a 7 day period before the loss in citizenship percentage limit takes place. In these 7 days the players will be able to act like normal citizens. At the end of the 7 days, all players in the region which was lost will lose their citizenship and gain asylum (we'll talk about soon) in the conquering country. If the population is still above the limit then players will lose citizenship based on the last time they worked or trained. The 7 days means that active players have time to move to another region in their country.

When a country loses some of it's citizenship limit due to a drop in world population. Players will be granted asylum in their current country based on the last time they worked or trained.

Asylum

Asylum is when a player has had to leave their country due to the citizenship limit being lowered. It is a special type of citizenship that could be considered as a basic citizenship. A player with asylum citizenship can change their asylum citizenship to any country in the game.

Players with asylum citizenship are not full citizens of a country so therefore cannot take part in politics (join a party, vote, etc.) and have limited ability to buy from the marketplace. Once they gain full citizenship they can participate like a normal citizen.

The countries' Congress (or Dictator) can choose to grant asylum citizens with full citizenship. There is no limit to the amount of asylums they can allow into their country, providing they do not go over the the citizenship limit.

Any Negatives To This Idea?

One is that new players will not be able to join the country of their choice. Now I am unsure how this could affect how many players decide not to actually join the game, but a warning that they cannot join the country now but may be able to gain citizenship once in the game may help. Similarly, signing up to get an email reminder when they can join the country may also help.

Another is PTOs. This is why I have decided that asylums cannot get involved in politics until granted full citizenship. This should stop all chance of this idea being exploited to PTO smaller countries.

So that is my idea. Soon I will add some graphics to the article. Check the comments for anything that another person has added to improve the idea, or anything which may need solving. The more us players give feedback on this idea and spread awareness, the more chance of the admins listening and improving the game. After all, countries trying to gain more regions to let more citizens in means more gold buying to give the admins profit - but lets make sure they gain a profit in a way we want them to.
