Welcome to 'The Green Socialist's' Article: Change eIreland for the Better!
First off I would like to commend 'Eternal Equinox's' article Same Sex Marriage Refferendum. It proved a very moving article. The real Irish government, and all Irish people, say we're equal; well obviously we're not.
But now to get down to business. Today's article is based on Brendan Corish (leader of the labour party in 196
He made the following speech: The Seventies Will be Socialist:
The seventies will be socialist. At the next general election Labour must . . . make a major breakthrough in seats and votes. It must demonstrate convincingly that it has the capacity to become the Government of this country. Our present position is a mere transition phase on the road to securing the support of the majority of our people. At the next general election (we) must face the electorate with a clear-cut alternative to the conservatism of the past and present; and emerge . . . . as the Party which will shape the seventies. What I offer now is the outline of a new society, a New Republic.
If you change that slightly you will get this: eIreland will be Socialist!
eIreland will be socialist. At the next general election the Independent Labour Party must . . . make a major breakthrough in seats and votes. It must demonstrate convincingly that it has the capacity to become the Government of this country. Our present position is a mere transition phase on the road to securing the support of the majority of our people. At the next general election (we) must face the electorate with a clear-cut alternative to the conservatism of the past and present; and emerge . . . . as the Party which will shape eIreland. What I offer now is the outline of a new society... a New Republic.
So please, in ainm dé, in the name of the martyrs who died for this country, the socialists who died for the world.....do you think they died for nothing?
Do you think James Connolly got shot, sitting on a chair, for nothing?
They died for something you know....a UNITED, EQUAL AND SOCIALIST LAND!
