A Problem. IRL.

At the marketplace, in the lowest denominator of food, out of the top six listings, 5 are imported.

Why am I bringing this up?

Before I begin, this article isn't a reflection of eRepublik (even though I posted a screenshot from it), it is a real life problem.

Our country is a agrarian society, we make food and it is not a trivial thing, food feeds people. We need food, water and air to survive and only food requires effort to produce.

We have started importing Rice and Dal from Pakistan, Wheat from USA, Dairy from Europe, Tea from UK, Coffee from Brazil. And no, I am not against globalisation, on the contrary I support the cross-trading and mingling of cultures. But what I don't support, is the deterioration of our agriculture sector. How, we have ignored our agriculture and in turn having to import the basic needs. This isn't sustainable nor environmental friendly. And it is applicable for all countries.

Our concentration on IT Services and Industrial expansion while beneficial, shouldn't be the only thing the government concentrate on. Let's also have a 'Grow in India' campaign too! Let's support our farmers! Offer training and supplies on growing vegetable in our own homes. Offer subsidies to Organic farmers, buy from them too!

And more importantly, let's us as individuals return to our roots (pun intended), and also consider agriculture instead of the generic engineering jobs!

Back to the earlier question. WHY am I bringing this up?

I have quit my job (started a small business), and around 2 months ago, have bought a small farmland (around 100 kms away from Chennai) and started growing Organic Jackfruits. (And other things soon in the future)

My inspiration? A friend of friend, a IIM-A (the Harvard of India), quit his high paying job to do the same.

Wanted to write something on this a long time ago, kept forgetting, that screenshot was a spark.
