It's that time of month again, Feds. In less than a week, congress elections will be upon us.

“But what is congress?” you ask. “Why should I care what those crazy kids get up to?”

Well, friend, sit down and have a listen, because saraht0ga is going to lay some knowledge on you.

Congress is where, via the eUS forums, members of the top five parties gather to discuss issues relevant to the eUnited States. From super exciting budget talk, to actually exciting potential policy changes, alliance information, and ways to improve the nation, congress is where the big stuff happens. Some months are more interesting than others, but it can take a boring month to prepare for when things get crazy.

Even if you don't think that sounds particularly interesting, congress is almost essential for a successful career in eRepublik politics. Having a good month in congress shows dedication to your country and the ideals of your party, a commitment to being active in the meta game, and a willingness to work with others to further the advancement of the country and make things run smoothly for the rest of our citizens. Besides getting involved in party jobs, there is no better way to show that you are willing and capable to work towards accomplishing great things in this game, and it's a way to break into national politics if you have higher aspirations than just party-related work.

There are really three main requirements to being successful in a congressional seat. First, our congressmen (and congressladies) have to be prepared to thoroughly read all threads in the congress forums that are relevant to their term (or, sometimes, things that have been carried over from the previous term). It also requires being particularly active in the meta game. Congress people need to be prepared to check the forums at least daily, preferably several times a day to make sure all sides are considered in discussions and that they are well informed. Lastly, all members of congress need to be prepared to ask for help if an issue comes up they either don't understand or aren't entirely familiar with.

The Federalist Party is one that is very dedicated to the success of its members, and we are all more of a big family than anything else. If someone is confused or hasn't dealt with a certain set of issues in game before, as long as they are willing to ask for help, anyone able will jump in to do all they can to make sure that person accomplishes what they set out to.

Congress is a somewhat under-appreciated but very important aspect of the game. Make sure the Feds are properly represented by voting for The Federalist Party on the 25th, and just maybe this congress term will be a little bit p/h.

So with JLO's party presidency there has been some thoughts on what may be changing or not changing. Well I was fortunate enough to catch up with two of our fellow p/h and dedicated staff members with Retention and Fun Department. You know them as crashthompson and dk3dknight, or you know them as those guys that dish out free crap to you, and give you lots of free resources and money, or worse yet you don't know them at all. Well if that's the case here is a start to getting to know them for those of you that are new, and a catch up on those of you that have been around for a while.

: Since I have both of you together......how do you both enjoy working with each other in the Rec department, or R&R if you will?

: To be honest for me its been business as usual, personally the fun department has had a huge build up of momentum that carried us through Blondeninja's presidency into JLO's

: Well, we talked about several subjects; No Fed Left Behind(NFL😎 and it's advantages, Shield, Hammer(within Shield), the Fun Dept., and some of the games.

: Some of it is to build relationships with the users, (this is kinda the part of the job that makes you look like your not doing much)

: Honestly my focus is going to be PMing new Federalist members. I was asked to look over our educational material.

: Another part of the process though is to create fun and exiciting activities, but activities can't be like a vending machine or they will lose their effectivness

: Index is going to start helping me PM new feds, I was asked to focus on education, and I am working to build retention with SHIELD and Feds
: Right now with SHIELD, looking at HAMMER, for Feds general messaging and cleaning up eduation. Working with Eli to expand our history so new Feds can read it.

: So what has been the best part for you guys now that you are more consolidated and working together?

: X_X I'll be honest I havn't had a chance to think on that I've been really busy charging forward so I havn't had much time to put that into consideration.

: Its just nice to have someone to balance you out and bounce ideas on. I honestly didn't know that much about NFLB(No Fed Left Behind), we pmed a few times, but I feel I have a better idea of it after talking with him.

: I agree after we talked on Fed Radio I had a much better understanding.

: Any new programs coming out or mostly retooling and upgrading what we already have to be more efficient and more effective?

: That will depend on the needs of the feds as we move forward.

: Yeah... actually funny story when I first joined I saw that MourningStar had the highest posts...So I decided that I could reach his post count and stay above him.. that was actually my first goal as a fed was to out post MourningStar.

: So if anyone wants to help in Retention or the Fun Department what are you expecting?

: I'll be honest 90% of the people who want to work in the fun department don't stay working in the fun department. Its less structured then other departments which means there is alot more freedom. Personally any time an employee had a suggestion or an idea I was there to back it up with resources (prize money) and so forth

: It seems like most departments have grown as of late, has the trend continued on your end?

: This is hard for me.... to admit but the fun department gains few employees that stick with it, personally the NFLB program has like 95% turnover rate for employees.

: So consistently fun is hard to come by...?

: In the past only darkapollo52 and now Bettie have made it past the 1 hour mark for working for the program. Im guessing people can get lost in the unstructured nature, I don't sit in front of a chalk board barking orders.. I tried that at first, but I found it works better if I find like minded people...

: So crashthompson you've been awfully quiet throughout, any thoughts from your point of view for our readers?

: We hope to expand the dept. We hope to keep Fun unstructured to a degree so it gets the flexibility it needs, but some structure to retention in general.

: To work well in the fun department you need to want to help people. Those people tend to work best for the fun department... say when you play say battlefield those that play the medic that run to save those who are hurt...well that selfish desire to help people (the medic that runs into the fray to save that fallen comrade) that usually works best in the fun department and the NFLB. I hope the video game analogy works

: How do you derive your constant pride and horniness Crash?

: Seeing other people be P/H. Voting up people's articles, seeing people's ideas either being shared or seeing them start to take off. Seeing people interested in SHIELD being supplied and droping damage.

Yes. And I have gold to award people. I will award gold for all quality articles that are published on your own newspaper and they have to be a minimum of 1000 words on the departments and its department heads.

Also, they have to be fairly serious and informative articles about the departments. Why? Because I HAVE GOLD TO AWARD.

How will the awards go? Well, instead of just rewarding 3 writers like most contests do I will be awarding gold per amount of writers and how they place.

If there are 10 article submissions, then 1st place will get 10 gold, 2nd place 9 gold, 3rd place 8 gold, 4th place 7 gold, etc. (Even if you place last you win gold!)
