PEC Zwolle did what it had to yesterday against Ajax Amsterdam in the first official match between last years National Champions and last years KNVB Cup winner.
The Cup winners were with 1-0 to strong for the squad from Amsterdam. This is the 2nd time in a row the 'Blue Fingers' from Zwolle beat Ajax. In last years match the score was 5-1 in favor for the Zwollenaars. Stef Nijland scored the only goal in yesterdays match. It has been a first time in the history of PEC Zwolle to win the "Johan Cruijff Cup".

The first minutes of the game promised to be a good football Sunday. After 3 minutes there was a chance for Nick Viergever from Ajax. His attempt hit the sidebar and with the rebound Viergever got injured on his knee.

Ajax more possession but less chances
A while later a big chance for Zwolle. Mustafa Samyak was a bit unfortunate to whip the ball a bit to hard over the goal of Ajax goalie Kenneth Vermeer. Ajax was in this phase of the game the team with the most possession of the ball but were unlucky with their chances. Zwolle had then the chance to counter more. Just as before half time when Jesper Drost broke out towards the Ajax goal but as soon as he was in range Nikolas Moisander took him down in what should have been a red card. Moisander got lucky with only the yellow card.

In the second half it was Ajax who started their downfall. Ajax player Ligeon delivered the ball to Zwolle player Mokotjo who, with a perfect pass, delivered the ball to his colleague Nijland. With one touch Nijland scored the only goal of the day. After that PEC Zwolle defended their goal and let Ajax pass the ball round and created danger from the counter themselves.

In the last minutes Ajax tried to push out a little offensive break but were unsuccessful. Because of this, gaps would open up in the Ajax defense which created a couple opportunities for the Zwolle forwards. Nikos Ioannidis almost had the 2-0 on his shoe. There were also some chances for Samyak and Drost but the score remained 1-0 in the favor of PEC Zwolle.
