Dead friends
THE EMPRAH
Hey.
Almost nine years playing this game. And no, this text won't be about what's wrong with me to be here for such a long time. It is about some dead accounts on my friends list.
Over the years I've accepted many and declined some, even sent some friend requests myself, and the list grew. It grew to 1100+ people.
Sometimes I wonder how many of those were multies. Probably most of them. But that's besides the point.
The point is, I've decided to clean the friends list from all the dead accounts (while I wait for the BH in RW against Greeks).
So, I've got in to my profile, in to my friends list all ready to start hacking it to pieces and there it was, the first on the list, my real life friend who invited me to this game. Good Spirit was the name of that account, Stefan the name of the person. He got hooked in '09 and finally managed to persuade me to join him in early '10. Like most of sensible people he lost interest in the game when they've introduced v2. A few years later Stefan, to whom I was a best man at the wedding, decided to move to USA and start a life with his wife there. They have a great little guy named Luka now, and I think that they are really happy. We see each other about once a year and I'm okay with that.
I don't know why it was hard for me to remove his account from my friends list. It's totally irrational. He is a call or a message away. Maybe because we often played online games together when we were younger and by chance this one was the last. He kinda grew up after. Or perhaps I miss his presence in my everyday life more than I'm ready to admit.
But anyway, I've set out to clean the list and I'm going to do it. At first glance there are many more inactive than active accounts there.
I do wonder how many will be left when I'm done.

Yeah, I've sat down to do it, and end up not doing it. You look at the names and try to remember who they were to you, obviously most are nobody beyond 'friend me becos +1' but most represent something - a party long gone, people you fought alongside in their battle and they appreciated that.
It was, as they say, a trip down memory lane. It felt good.
I havta clean my list every month or so, pity innit?
Have around 90-100 current count but don't really know them and would not recognise them in the street.

With an article named "Dead Friends", I thought it as going to take a sad turn when you started talking about your RL friend...
eRep would hardly be the place for things like that...
Personally I agree, but I have seen people bring up their dead friends and relatives in both eRep and other browser based games, so it wouldn't have surprised me if your article did take that turn.
You mean the guy who said his dad died on the 1st April 1988 but it turned out to be an April's Fool Joke?
We create stories around the things that happen here, that go far beyond the mechanics of a fairly boring game. Those created moments in virtual history are the thing that keeps us all here. Or at least keep us feeling nostalgic enough to not leave. It's a shame the people that run these games don't realise that. Our friends list is the index to those memories.

Man... I haven't seen that avatar in a while 😃
I have been playing this game for about as long as you have, and I run through my friends list every once in a while. I guess that's why I only have a hundred or so friends. All the best...
I look at my list now and then, I couldn't ever imagine removing people. A lot of really good times and memories come rushing back when I see the vast majority of those old account names.

Don't do it if you don't feel right doing it.
It's simple.
Have a nice day

P.S.
Just for the records, I'm here until Sep 2009. We are the Dinosaurs.
(Or maybe, I'm a Hamstersaur)
Alot of UK navy high command left to form a gaming clan called Bike Squadron Alpha we had our 2nd official real life meet up in London two weeks ago. As much as this game has sucked over time i will never deny how it changed my life.
The goddamn navy was the best.
The Naby was,is and always the best that special time with those people will never be able to be repeated in erep history. I am lucky to say i served during that time Naby Duck will save us all \_o-
