Day 1,884 : Escape and Evasion

Day 1,884, 23:41 Published in Belgium Belgium by RooieLente

I took a moment to pause and catch my breath. The biggest mistake I could make now was to try and rush out of here. On the other hand, the longer I stayed, the larger the chance of discovery. I sipped from the plastic water bottle my interrogator had been drinking from. A quick search of his pockets had not yielded much, except for the sidearm. And even the use of a firearm was not to be taken lightly: the first shot would warn the entire holding facility.

I slowly moved through the empty corridor, listening intently for movement or sound. My guess was it was night. Night sounds different…even inside. At each intersection, I tried to catch a glimpse of what was behind the corner by using a polished belt buckle as a mirror.

One guard…yet too far away and badly positioned to sneak on to. I slowly screwed the lightbulb from the lighting hanging from the ceiling. It flickered a few times before finally going out. I held my breath…footsteps…he had fallen for it.

As he rounded the corner, looking at the light, the first fist hit him in the throat, making sure he would not alarm others. The second in the kidney, a quick kick from my army boot hit him in the face. He went down cold.

I dragged him into a nearby janitor room and searched his body. Another sidearm and two stun grenades. The janitor himself had been so kind as to neatly stack several household goods, of which the duct tape interested me most. Slowly, a plan started to form in my mind.

As I finally found the staircase, I slowly climbed the stairs, carefully evading the patrols by ducking in and out of the staircase as they passed. Peering through the keyhole of the ground floor, I could see another problem rising. At least four armed guards were posted in the front lobby: two in front of the elevator, two more towards the exit.

I quickly descended a level again, hatching my plan. Tearing the duct tape with my teeth, I fixed the two stun grenades together. I pushed the elevator button and waited. I selected the ground floor…the button lighting up brightly. I attached the pins of my homemade explosive to the doors and escaped the elevator as the doors closed again.

With a single ‘ping’, the elevator reached the ground floor. As the doors opened, a loud bang and blinding flash burst into the lobby, seconds before I bolted out of the staircase. The first two guards were knocked down by the sudden blast of air pressure. The other two blinded, grabbing their eyes, as the ‘ping’ had made them look aside.

I sprinted outside as sirens began to sound loudly in the night. I kept running…no idea where I was or where I was heading to.
