[TUP] Congress Voting Record #2

Day 2,478, 07:01 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by VoodooMike71

Following the stunning success of the previous What I did in Congress This Week article, yet another week has passed. Time, it seems, is like a bladder full of p*ss - always passing.

During the last week - steady yourselves now, you may need to sit down for a moment - Congress has been voting on even more proposals. No one told me that life as a politician would be so taxing ("taxing"! geddit? see what I did there?!).

So, once again in the interests of democracy, transparency, and keeping our loyal party up-to-date and involved in what government is up to, here's this week's Congress Update...

Work Tax: increase to 2%
Proposer: Rob The Bruce (UKRP)
Raising work tax from 1% to 2% - so far the most contentious issue in this Congress term. Most people discussing the proposal (including me and the rest of your TUP Congress members) were in favour of the proposal, while a couple of people were fervently against it.

The MoF came out in favour of the proposal too, but most of Congress had already voted.

The proposal was (eventually) REJECTED by 20 votes to 14.

VAT & Import Tax: Food
Proposer: Tugboat Davy (UKPP)
The proposal was to increase food import tax from 1% to 99%, so fairly drastic then. I, like many others, voted against this proposal. My reasons were that no reason for the change was published, and the increase is too high. I support helping UK producers through tax breaks, but shutting out foreign imports completely (which a 99% tax would do) is not the right thing to do. Our UK producers still need to be competitive.

The proposal was REJECTED by 21 votes to 12/21

Minimum Wage: increase
Proposer: James Martin (WRP)
James Martin proposed increasing minimum wage from 0.1 GBP to 0.2GBP. No reasons or support for the change were published. After a short discussion it was clear that this would damage commune orgs who pay their employees with food/weps instead of money. In particular, the NHS would suffer as a result of this. So voting against it was a no-brainer.

The proposal was REJECTED by 21 votes to 7

VAT & Import Tax: Food
Proposer: fraztodd (UKPP)
Again. This time UKPP suggested raising the import tax from 1% to 33% (instead of 99😵. Although they didn't publish any support for the change, I voted for it, to help eUK producers without shutting out imports altogether.

The proposal was PASSED by 21 votes to 12

VAT & Import Tax: Grain
Proposer: Arhivator Cvarkov(WRP)
Hot on the heels of the food import tax proposal, this one came along. The terms were the same - raise import tax on grain from 2% to 33%. For the same reasons as last time, I voted for.

The proposal was PASSED by 14 votes to 11

Declare War!
Proposer: WayneKerr CP
A proper proposal to get our teeth into! The CP wanted to declare war against Norway in support of our allies in Germany. Norway and Finland had NE'd Germany, we'd already NE'd Canada for our war against them, so Wayne proposed declaring war in order to help our allies. This would cost in the order of 370 gold, but it was being privately financed and wouldn't cost taxpayers or the Treasury a penny. Therefore it was easy to vote Yes.

The proposal was PASSED by 31 votes to 1
We will fight them on the glaciers...

Next week, more of the same another set of important proposals, including one proposed by me. See you on the other side.
