Senate Election Results Summary

Day 1,559, 19:46 Published in Australia Australia by Adam Von Templar
Preamble:

Well the Senate elections are over for another month and I am writing this article to give a brief overview of the results. Please note that any comments accompanying the data are strictly my own interpretation.

Note the following abbreviations are used for the top 5 parties:

APP – Australian Parliamentary Party
AI – Australian Independent
ANP – Australian National Party
KHMC – KnightHawks Military Council
GnG – Green and Gold Party

Number of Seats

First up a total of 38 seats were allocated during the election, a break down in the number of seats won per party is given below. As shown below APP and ANP parties won the most seats, followed by AI, KHMC and GnG. No parties won an outright majority (both APP and ANP with 29😵 as is usual in eAustralian politics.

Number of Votes

There were a total of 241 votes cast in the elections, down from 268 last month, the total number of votes by party is broken down below. As shown the number of votes gained by each party matches their overall ranking based upon party membership, ie APP with 66 votes, AI with 62, ANP with 52, KHMC with 40 and GnG with 21.

Turnout

Now we move into some of the more interesting statistics that can be used to measure a party’s voting effectiveness. Percentage turnout can be used as a measure to see how active a party’s membership is, it is done by measuring the number of votes vs the number of party members. This method is not 100% accurate as it does not take into account votes from people outside the party who may vote for a candidate on the day.

As shown in the bar graph below the ANP came out on top with a 68.4% turnout where as the GnG was ranked last with 51.2%.

Voting Efficiency

This is one of my favourite indicators as it shows how ‘smart’ a party has voted and is done by comparing the ratios of the number of votes a party received to the number of seats they won. As shown in the below graph the ANP used an average of 4.7 votes to win a seat, where as the KHMC used 10.0. A reason for such a low value for the ANP is that we decided to run several candidates in NZ seats, as a result some members were elected with as little as 0 votes.

Conclusion

I think the results clearly show that there is still a lively competition between parties in eAustralia. As to who ‘won’ the election the APP and the ANP have shown that they are the principal powerhouses of the left and right in eAustralian politics.

If there has to be a winner I think the ANP has shown again that when it comes to voting the party is the most disciplined and efficient, getting the votes to where they are needed, this has compensated us for a lower overall membership.

If there has to be a loser I would nominate the GnG, not only did they win the least number of seats but they ranked last in number of votes and % turnout, while also ranking second worst in efficiency.

I hope this article is helpful for other PP’s in gauging their party’s performances and helps them target areas where they wish to improve.

To ANP Members

I must admit coming into this election I was a bit nervous, being my first PP term I wished to perform well and was unsure about the unity of the party. In the week leading up to the election I put in a lot of leg work trying to communicate with you my fellow members and I think that it showed on voting day.

I want to give a big shout out to alimilano who when I went awol for a few days due to RL work stepped in and did a lot of the organisation behind the scenes. I would also like to thank all the ANP people who were on IRC as the voting unfolded including but not restricted to infin, SC, DocterDry2, alimilano, LF, Adam Beck, banzai, derka and TJ.

Last but not least thank you to all the rank and file members who may not always be that visible in the media or the forums but quietly go about their elives and can be relied upon to show up month after month and give us such a strong result.

Cheers
