Permanent Reunion: Beta-giants and Boomers
Ananias
My fellow eMericans,
I am no one of importance or influence, I am simply an citizen of the eUnited States of America. If you review my profile you will find no medals for Battle Hero or Resistance Hero or Country Presidency or, ever-elusive, Media Mogul; I have my Hard Worker Medals for which I am very proud and I was fortunate enough to be elected to Congress for two terms representing Oregon. For the most part I stumble though my days working and training, seeking opportunities to fight and working to keep my wellness high enough to do well.
I cannot afford more that Q1 weapons when I do buy weapons, and I have to receive gifting through an org or by request. Like I said, I’m no one of importance nor particularly special, but like most of you I have invested time and treasure into eRepublik, and more specifically the eUS, because, on the whole, I cannot imagine living (even virtually) in any other nation on earth.
There have been many calls recently, from all quarters of our society, to reunite for strength in the face of the advancing armies of Portugal and Mexico. I believe that is a valid reason for the short term, but the challenge with temporary unity is that, when the threat is reduced or removed, then our reward becomes only the return to business as usual…and it is that very “business as usual” approach that places us in the position of weakness we strive to put to rest.
For those of you that are too “new”, or too “old”, to recognize it, the greatest impediment to the integrity of our union is the existence of a class struggle that is as ubiquitous as the phrase “pertamaxx” in the media. The class struggle to which I speak is the, all too common, dominance and perceived authority of those that joined eRepublik during its “beta” phase (I refer to them as the “beta-giants”) over those that had the misfortune of finding their way to eRepublik only after the advent of V1 (I have heard them, us, referred to as V1 Baby Boomers, or simply as “boomers” or “noobs”).
See, the administrators of eRepublik made a decision as they deployed the beta-tested product of eRepublik not to provide for equity of opportunity. The beta’s retained their status, and, perhaps more profoundly impacting, the mechanics of the game only provide for improvement or inactivity. So the strong grow stronger, and even the strongest of the boomers will likely never catch up with active beta-giants.
Therefore, to those beta-giants that choose to approach us like chattel to be moved, or sheep to be herded, we often have little recourse but to follow blindly or be isolated by ridicule from those that have established their persona months before our arrival, or have received the favor of those same individuals.
This class struggle, in my opinion, fundamentally reinforces division. Boomers are not considered equals to many of the beta-giants and our willing contributions avoided unless we show willingness to be pawns. Anyone that has been told that the do not have any idea what they are talking about, or has had their opinion ridiculed based on their experience level, or is ignored in debate understands the consequences of the eRepublik class system.
We live in a virtual nation which is ostensibly managed and directed by those that often feel the necessity of telling boomers where to go, what to buy (or not buy) based on personal agendas for virtual success.
What they so often miss is that there is an interdependence that exists in which beta-giants depend on the boomers for support as much as the boomers rely on the beta-giants for guidance. I believe it would be fair to say that, if united, boomers could make many changes in the eUS geographic, cultural and political landscape…however, without the experience and wisdom of the beta-giants, many, if not all, of those changes would be detrimental to the eUS as a nation.
The first step required to obtain permanence in the reunion is a basic change of priorities that is not based on when someone joined eRepublik or how many experience points they have racked up but, instead, is based upon leadership and engagement. I have been fortunate to have met many beta-giants that value leadership, and I have been fortunate to meet many boomers that may lack experience but excel in the leadership qualities and active engagement in promoting the interests of all the citizen of the eUS.
If this game is to be, or can be, won, it will be won through the promulgation of equality of ideas apart from the length of participation. If this game is to be, or can be, lost, it will be lost through the continuation and increase of barriers to sound ideas and beneficial change based on length of participation rather than merit.
In short, the way to unity in the face of the current threats, and future threats, to the nation is the fundamental commitment we must make to value one another beyond the rhetoric and platitudes of electoral campaigns, and, instead, to the very core of our identity as a nation…both virtually and in real life.
Thank you for your time, together we can accomplish that which only a few short months ago could have only been imagined. Let us endeavor to seek a more perfect, and permanent, reunion, together in the coming days...as dark as they my seem.

Brilliant article. Voted good Sir.
They should have kept the skill increase mechanics of beta.. at a certain point, skill would hardly increase or cease to increase..
this way, new players could at least catch up a little.
This is the best article I have read in awhile. Voted twice, already subbed.
I've been around for awhile now, and I remember the media was awesome. People wrote stuff of meaning, I hope we get back to that sometime soon. These lotteries and free gold articles are killin me lol.
Its time for us all to stand as one, or fall divided.
Good to see a man of your caliber is still around Ananias
Great article. Voted.
Voted for awesome
After this article your not going to be a nobody anymore. And hurray i'm a beta-giant! Well im the beta part im not so sure about the giant though.
Well said,
Voted
This was a great article Ananias!
I'm not sure what zone I fit in 🙂
Definitely one of the better articles from a "noob" 😉 that I've read in awhile. It's good to see new citizens who have a grasp for the concepts of the game.
I agree with many of the points that you bring up. Erepublik, in its most simple form, gives very little opportunity for new citizens to get ahead in the game - unless you are fond of spending large amounts of money to purchase gold.
As a "beta-giant," I can safely say that I am guilty of not listening to the newer fellas all the time. I subscribe to newspapers that I see often. I see often newspapers that have a lot of subscribers. These newspapers get their subscribers from building up their subscribe base over time. Time is the ultimate factor that affects rank, as you point out.
Voted & Sub'd 😉
Woah, great work!
Another fine article my friend,
You are so full of win! Amazing read!!!
A vote and a subscribe from a beta-giant
Good article. I basically agree, but I'm not sure that it's a matter of pre or post V1. I think it's just age in general. But the fact is the earlier you came in, the better off you disproportionately are. If however you want a nice way around this, you could always move to Thailand, where we listen to everyone.

A:
I said it before and I will say it again here, I am so glad you reconsidered that one bad idea you had a while back. Your thoughts are the rare gems in the mediocrity that the rest of us put forth.

Nice article 😉
This has to be one of the best written and articulated articles i have read since i began playing.
Well written. I guess I am what might be called a "cusp-child" born during Beta but barely a month before the "reBirth" of the New World.
Mazel Tov! Voted and still subscribed. And proudly claim you as one of my true eRep friends!
Pertamaxx!
(and, as a noob, I don't even know what that means. I always thought it was some sort of Indonesian battle cry)...
Despite being a noob, I continue to shoot my mouth off (and sometimes regret it).
But yes, unity in the US and with our allies will take long-term commitment. I think that in spite of the international and internal challenges we face, we have an opportunity to write a new page.
Great article.
Can't we all just get along?
Yes, we can.
Thank you all for taking the time to read the article, the wall of text that it is. I am absolutely blown away by the response, and very thankful that it was received with the intent that it was written. As JBB so aptly commente😛
"we have an opportunity to write a new page."
Time to put the past behind us and come together, reunited for what lay ahead.
Excellent article. Voted and subscribed.
superb, you obviously put a great deal of though into this. i especially enjoyed that someone is addressing an issue besides the war or politics in general. Voted!
I think this is a very good article. Written amazingly well and points out some very good points.
I agree with this, but at the same time I cannot help but feel that although this is true that it has to be noted that the "beta-giants" are somewhat of a dying breed. I felt that the article was saying that there is a literal division between the two which really is not the case. I would say that if you gave the game 2 or 3 more months and at that point noone from Beta will still be in the same positions of 'supreme power' as they are now. Either from dying out or being forced out.
I feel the learning curve is no more than 3 months for this game and after that you are really up there and able to do anything.
I try my hardest to keep an open mind and listen to all new perspectives and input from those who are new, but sometimes its just the fundamental differences between our two generations.
I wont make this into my own mini article in a comment.
Very well done, I commend you. Voted.
Excellent article! And it comes as a relief to see that there are some in this game who can write AND spell! The quality of many articles in this game is atrocious (some of which may have Google Translator partly to blame) Keep up the good work!
Do I count as a beta-giant if I went inactive for several months between beta and v1? 😛
Great article, Ananias.
This is a good article and makes some strong points. There are some things that I may not fully agree with.
First, is that while it requires a few months to get up to speed, it's not impossible to get some leverage if you're a V1 player. Joe DaSmoe is a good example of this.
Second, there's no damn reason to take anybody's word for it, just because they say they started in Beta. Listen to them if they make sense, if not, that's their problem, not yours.
Third, the third chasm is the relative amount of RL experience that players bring to the table. Some beta folks have a lot to share, some don't - just like the V1 players. A reunion that ignores those distinctions will still only produce a half unified country.
Great points Bravo. Very much agreed that it depends on the player. Not only the ideas they share, but also our shared willingness to evaluate merit based on the message rather than the messenger per se.
We all think we live up to that standard, but I know personally sometimes I fail to listen too.
Thanks for taking the time to comment everyone!
Voted, Subscribed and Enjoyed!
Ananias great article, as a "n00b" who has encountered the eRep "elites" bullsh*t attitudes as well as their helpfulness I look forward to what the next three months bring.
I am ready!
good read. subscribed.
From an aspiring 'Boomer', I applaud your article in every way, shape and form.
No surprise that I agree with, and side with, the author here.
I don't really view the game as having such a static class system. Maybe because I imagine it evolving. Perhaps it is a convenient self delusion. I love the markets of the game for now, and imagine that self improvement will extend into making government and group decisions of more consequence. Even if we don't change to an asymtotic self improvement model we can make self improvement small in comparison to technilogical and economic group improvements. I very much see and feel the dynamic you are discribing and I can't help but imagine the programmers do too. If what you are discribing isn't the great force acting on the programmer's I will probably stop liking the game. I would much prefer improvement to come by influencing player actions but I am guessing it unfortunatly will come in the form of paying the game dirrectly.
vote, and wow, alllll the big guns are in here! congrats!
oh and if you are a noob at lvl 16....that depresses me because I turn lvl 10 tomorrow... damn....
Brilliant.
voted. Very fine article. This game, as a general rule, has not been noob friendly. And I am definately that.
voted - from beta, no giant 🙂
Applause!
This is truly an outstanding article that could not have been delivered at a more needed time. In the current context, what you are saying is indeed true.
If the hostility towards newcomers is not dealt with, we may face a further rift in the eRepublik society. The conflict of classes will be overwhelming for many 'boomers' therefore making them more inclined to quit the game.
It is a disturbing image. I am glad many people see this issue as much of a problem as I do.
wow, I teared a little reading that. well written and voted
Beta players > new guys
Woah, unexpectedly good article (for eRep). Vote and sub.
Wow wonderful article, definetley one of the best one's I have read from a "noob" so far. Yes, being a "beta-giant" (although I'm classified as one because I joined during the beta times, I don't see myself as a giant whatsoever) I will have to admit to not listening to those with lower ranks. However, I admend you for writing such a wonderful article and calling for the equality that should be observed.
I... never saw it as such... kudos
Ananias you point out some good things, but as a Beta player myself I remember being shuned for being new. A general rule of thumb is 1 month of active playing and your somewhat experienced. About lvl 14 and your a bit more normal. Then after that you got to make a name for yourself. Jewitt is the perfect example!!
Anyways you got to realize Ananias some of these new players come into here not knowing what to expect and they push their luck. Michael Lewis actually tried to run for President a few days after playing and he planned 3 or 4 months in advance. This, and a few other things, turned him into our beloved God. Michael Lewis forgive me but the way he acted made him a fool and turned him into the butt of too many jokes.
So these new people got to realize you got to edge into this game. Its like making a lane change with a car. You keep the same speed and you smoothly go over! You don't slow down doing so nor do you jerk over!
Plus Ananias don't forget get a few thousand people together they are bound to form their own cliques. The book called The Stand, has a great example but I can't remember it. Something about bring 2 people together they will recreate love. Bring 3 people together they will recreate society. Bring 6 people together they will recreate war. Something along those lines. You get it though.
Good job my friend. There are some of us V1 players that have managed to carve out a place or at least feel as though we have carved out a place for ourselves in this eworld but most do not get that far and rarely without spending real money to do it. The good old boys hold very tight to there power however and Im personally afriad that even after seeing this artical which is very good and makes more sence then most anything I have seen sence Ive been here. They will still hold tightly to there control.
A fine article.
