On the photo: Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus)
With fewer than 600 remaining individuals (distribution), it is believed to be the world's second-rarest pinniped and one of the most endangered mammals in the world.

On the photo: Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
The common dolphin is not the dolphin of popular imagination despite its name; that distinction belongs to the bottlenose dolphin due to its widespread use in marine parks.

On the photo: Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)
The loggerhead sea turtle spends most of its life in saltwater and estuarine habitats, with females briefly coming ashore to lay eggs. The loggerhead reaches sexual maturity within 17–33 years and has a lifespan of 47–67 years.

On the photo: Hippocampus ramulosus
Seahorse is the title given to forty-seven species of marine fish in the genus Hippocampus. "Hippocampus" comes from the Ancient Greek hippos meaning "horse" and kampos meaning "sea monster".

The Adriatic Sea is a small, enclosed sea, but large enough to accommodate some of the most beautiful diving sites in the world with an amazing diversity of fauna.

Life in Croatia’s undersea world is part of the evolutionary heritage dating back to the prehistory of seas all over the world.

A good example is the Mediterranean feather star which is 500 million years old, or jellyfish, evolutionary sea pioneers that continue to prosper to this day.

The Adriatic Sea linked to an evolutionary pool in which species developed and spread, and gained specific traits within a unique environment.

Maksimir Stadium is a stadium in the Croatian capital of Zagreb. It takes its name from the neighbourhood of Maksimir. It is primarily the home of Dinamo Zagreb, the top football team in the country.

Stadion Poljud is a multi-use stadium in the Croatian city of Split. Its impressive seashell-like roof structure, spanning 215 meters, has been copied by a large number of world stadiums in the years that followed.

Eternal Derby (Croatian: Vječni derbi) also known as the Croatian Derby, (Croatian: Hrvatski derbi) is the name given to matches between the two biggest and most popular Croatian football clubs Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split.

The rivalry can be traced back to 1920s when Zagreb's Građanski and Hajduk often clashed in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia championships.

After World War II, Građanski was disbanded by the authorities, and Dinamo Zagreb was formed to take its place, retaining its colours.

The two clubs soon became part of the "Big Four" of Yugoslav football (the other two being Red Star Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade from Serbia).

This lasted until 1991, when Croatia declared independence so clubs started competing in the Prva HNL, which saw its first season being played in 1992.

Since 1992 Dinamo and Hajduk won 18 out of 19 Croatian championship titles, as well as 15 out of 19 Croatian Cups, which makes them by far the most successful and popular clubs in Croatia.

As of March 2011, there have been 81 derbies played in total since the establishment of the Croatian championship in 1992, with Dinamo winning 34 and Hajduk 28 games, while 19 matches ended in a draw.

During Easter, eggs would be painted with bright colors, and would be given as gifts, especially to young children or a significant other.

The most common phrase put on pisanicas is Happy Easter, or "Sretan Uskrs." Other common decorations are doves, crosses, flowers, traditional designs, and other slogans wishing health and happiness.

Big Easter eggs in the capital of Croatia - Zagreb.

Pisanica (Croatian) (pl. pisanice) is a decorated Croatian Easter egg that comes from an old Slavic custom dating back to pagan times.

Before paint became common, villagers would have to use whatever resources they had available around them to make the dyes and paints themselves.

The most common color for eggs was red, due to the abundance of red beets and other vegetables.

Did you know?

The word pisanica is derived from the Croatian word that means "writing".

The day before Easter, Roman Catholics and other Christians go to a late night mass carrying a basket of traditional food (including bread, cheese, and eggs (either pisanicas or regular eggs). During the mass, priests bless the food, which are kept for the next morning to eat.

Traditional game

On Easter day, a traditional game is played in which at least two people choose eggs and hold them vertically while one person lightly taps the end of the other egg with their end, to see whose will crack. Anyone whose egg cracks must choose another and then tap the other person's egg, and they continue until all the eggs have been used and cracked but the last one. Whoever holds the strongest egg in the end which has not been cracked, wins.

Kraš is a Croatian food company based in Zagreb, specializing in confectionery products.
