How to IRC - Setting Up Tutorial

Day 2,672, 15:52 Published in Ireland Ireland by Ian Arb

So what the heck is IRC?

Interesting question! IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat which is like an instant message chat room. If you’ve used some sort of instant messaging chat room you get what I’m talking about. It’s commonly used in conjunction with forums by many Gaming clans for better communication

This all sounds pretty cool but why do we use it?

Simply because communicating instantly on a chat room enhances a more fun and engaging gaming environment. It also provides an advantage on the battlefield as timely planned fights contributes to victory ten times over. Finally you get to chat to your fellow citizens and you would be silly not to grab that opportunity to meet unique people behind their keyboards 😉

Right gotcha! What do I do now to check out this awesome IRC?

Firstly you need to use an IRC client to get started.

mIRC
This is the client I use and not many people like the old style interface but it’s quite powerful. You have a bunch of good tools to work with such as hiding your IP behind a proxy, logging channels, auto connecting your nick to name just a few.

IceChat
IceChat works in a similar way to mIRC but I never really grew to like their interface. However you don’t have to pay the once off license fee compared to mIRC but you can bypass the mIRC payment via a crack. (PM me for details)

ChatZilla
This is quite a popular one for some reason, maybe because of easy installation. You will need the Firefox browser to install this simple plugin and you’re good to go.

Mibbit
Mibbit is a very popular IRC client because it’s just easy to use and you may have possibly seen its API incorporated on forum websites.

Here is the list of IRC clients as there are many of them out there and I’ve just listed the four I’m familiar with.

That is a good bunch of them there but I would choose any of the four I’ve listed. Once you’ve installed your favourite client you are ready for the next tutorial where I will introduce you to simple IRC commands.

In this tutorial you’ve been introduced to what IRC is, why we use it and the types of IRC clients you can use. So in the next tutorial I will teach you the simple IRC commands via mIRC on a YouTube video where I will log onto one of our own channels such as #IrishArmy and #eIreland. Also you get to hear my lovely Dublin accent!

See you guys next time!
