[Intellectual] A Constitutional Dictatorship

Day 2,666, 14:36 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Sir Humphrey Appleby

An update from a former Dictator that may or may not have fallen asleep on a couple of his terms...

Good evening chaps!

For the tl;dr, skip to 'my solutions'

Part 1: Dictators and Us

After discussing the role of our new dictatorship on the dental corps and ukrp irc channels I’ve been asked to clarify some of my ideas concerning our role as citizens under an effective tyranny. For those of you unaware of the changes to society a dictatorship brings - essentially the people you elect have no power with every penny of taxes free to be spent how the dictator wishes instead. The only way to remove the dictator is through a costly £200k civil war and then we permanently face the threat of a foreign-led PTO bringing us back under dictatorship again.

Given how easily it’s been for well organised foreign groups take over similar small countries under this new module, it’s my belief that a dictatorship can bring a large element of security to our country that we would continually be vulnerable without. However; the obvious problem of how we possibly give and enforce our consent on how we are run, in my view, makes accepting a dictator without some sort of constitutional binding unacceptable in the long run. Whilst I think Wayne has made some careful steps in trying to seek legitimacy by involving those he considers elite in his discussions - I don't believe this is a satisfactory resolution as far as the rest of us are concerned.

Part 2: The ‘best for the eUK’

One thing I’m sure a lot of you would’ve noted is the core theme of both Huey and Wayne claiming to be ‘doing the best for the eUK’ in their respective administrations. This is a rather classic position adopted by national leaders and a well received one when conducted properly. The inherent problem, however, is that their ‘best for the eUK’ is limited to their own personal vision and ideology - not necessarily shared by the majority. With CPs at least you have the reasonable confidence your other elected representatives (Members of Parliament) will wake up and remove them - under a dictatorship it is fair to doubt whether they would happily remove themselves. For me personally - the best for the eUK has largely been the wishes of the majority of it’s citizens (for better or worse).

So when finally pressed as to what my solution would be - to either go back to democracy and live in permanent risk of foreign PTO or surrender all contributing liberties to whoever the cabal thinks would be a laugh as Dictator next - I choose both and neither.

Part 3: A constitutional dictatorship

I highly believe that if Wayne should deny Huey or the next CP his democratic rights and try and govern alone it wouldn't take particularly long for democracy to reassert itself with the overwhelming strength of a pissed citizenry. In my opinion, there is no other legitimacy than democratic consent for a government to operate in a game like this - if people were told that their opinion no longer counts then it doesn’t take a genius to realize they won’t hang about. That said, the security vulnerabilities that the political module has for democracy makes our position in the world extremely uncertain should we catch the attention of an organised MU.

My solution is thus:-

-We should retain the dictatorship under appreciation of the political module and how to collectively operate within it.

-That the dictator officially abdicates the day to day running of the government to the CP and takes a purely advisory role.

-That the dictator respects the democratic rights of the CP and Parliament; though IRC/in message votes and carries out their will in ingame votes.

-That the defence of the country is jointly conducted by the dictator and the Ministry of Defence.

-That the dictator respects the fact they are needed largely to prevent a malicious foreigner taking their place.

-That the dictator accepts that if they defy the democratic wishes of the country they will be deposed and billed £200k (think BigAnt).

-That if the dictator wishes to resign, a national referendum takes place deciding who should replace them.

Much obliged for reading this far 🙂.

Appleby

[21:48] Appleby: the idea is as soon as someone breaks the agreement then everyone calls them a c**t

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost....

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. .....

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!
