Day 1,949

Gold Mines

Gold Mines

- Each Gold Mine will hold a deposit of 100.000 Gold
- If your citizenship country owns a Mine, you can explore it daily and find a variable amount of Gold
- The Mine can be explored until the Gold has been depleted

Gold Mines competition

- The Gold Mines competition is based on a new ranking: Citizenship Damage
- Five countries will receive a Gold Mine based on a contest held for 7 days between Day 1952 and Day 1958
- During this period, when you fight in ANY battle (even if your citizenship country is not involved in it) your damage will be added to the ranking as damage done by your citizenship country
- In this ranking, the world has been divided into 5 main areas: Europe, Asia, America, Oceania and Africa
- The country with the highest damage from each main area wins the contest and therefore a Gold Mine
- The Mines will be awarded within 24 hours after the end of the contest
- The Mines will be located in the real life capital of the winning countries
- Here is a list of the historical (real life) capitals: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Capital

Where I can see the Gold Mines

- The Gold Mines will appear on the country page of the countries that own one of the 5 Gold Mines, and from here you can check the Gold remaining in the Mine
- The same information is available on the page of the regions with a Gold Mine
- The Gold Mines will be visible on the map, with 3 different icons depending on the remaining deposit of Gold in the Mine

Gold Mines - How do I explore it

- A citizen can explore the Mine if his citizenship country has a region with a Gold Mine
- A citizen can explore the Gold Mine daily, with the cost of only 10 Energy, by going to "My places"
- In “My places” there will be an “Explore” button which can be used once a day. After using it, the citizen receives a variable sum of Gold, between 0.3 Gold and 40 Gold
- When a citizen explores the Gold Mine, the amount of Gold he receives is withdrawn from the Gold Mine deposit
- When a citizen explores the Gold Mine, the country receives 0.1 Gold for every exploration, no matter what the citizen received
- The sum that goes to the country is also withdrawn from the Gold Mine deposit
- If a country owns two or more Gold Mines, the deposit of the Gold Mines is cumulated
- If the country has two or more Gold Mines, the Gold withdrawn at each exploration is equally divided between the Gold Mines
- The amount received by the citizens and the countries at each exploration is not influenced by the number of Mines owned
- A citizen can explore the mine if it has at least level 22

Airstrike

- Citizens are able to donate food and currency in order to start an Airstrike
- The formulas have been updated keeping into account the currency exchange rates and the food prices
- You can check the new formulas here: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Airstrike
- The donations for the Airstrike will be available for at least one month
- Regions with Gold Mines can be attacked directly via the Airstrike, just like any other region (as long as the conditions for launching the Airstrike are met).
- Gold Mines can be explored even if there is no transport route to the capital.

Day 2,586

Winter Specials 2014

Winter has arrived to the New World! Starting Day 2,586 until the end of Day 2,596, the following Winter Specials are available:

1. Winter Treats - Receive 1 Winter Treat per 25 defeated enemies
- 1 Winter Treat recovers 50 Energy
- Winter Treats are received after defeating an Ice Giant, which appears every 25 defeated enemies. The Winter Treats can be collected from the Weekly Challenge. After collecting, you can view them in your Storage.
- Winter Treats must be used by the end of Day 2,603

2. Winter Bombs - Receive 1 Winter Bomb per 250 defeated enemies

Winter Bombs deal:
- 200 000 damage in Division 1,
- 750 000 damage in Division 2,
- 1 500 000 damage in Division 3 and
- 3 250 000 damage in Division 4

- Winter Bombs must be used within 10 days from the moment they are received. However, if you receive new Winter Bombs, the durability of all of them will be extended into 10 days.

3. Sugar Rush - Receive a bigger Energy Recovery based on your activity on the previous day.

If you consumed 75% or more of your maximum recoverable Energy, you will have +10 for your Energy Recovery the next day.

The bonus doesn’t stack day after day, but you can upkeep it. After getting a higher Energy Recovery, the 75% requirement will stay the same, but the amount of Energy that has to be recovered the next day will obviously grow, as the maximum recoverable Energy grows as well.

Example 1
On Monday, Player A has an Energy Recovery of 10 per 6 minutes, which converts into 2400 Energy in 24 hours. To reach the target of 75%, he has to recover at least 1800 Energy (0.75*2400).

During Monday, Player A recovered 1900 Energy so he reached the target. On Tuesday, at day change, his Energy Recovery raises to 20 per 6 minutes, which converts into 4800 Energy in 24 hours. To reach the target of 75%, he has to recover at least 3600 Energy (0,75*4800).

On Tuesday, Player A recovers 4000 Energy and reaches the target. His Energy Recovery is maintained at the same level, so on Wednesday he will still recover 20 Energy per 6 minutes.

On Wednesday Player A is busy and only manages to recover 3000 Energy. This means that he didn’t reach the target of 75% and on Thursday at day change his Energy Recovery drops back to 10 per 6 minutes. To get it back to 20 per 6 minutes, he has to recover at least 1800 Energy during Thursday.

Example 2
Player B has a Power Pack and recovers 30 Energy per 6 minutes. To reach the target of 75%, he has to recover 7200 Energy during the day. Player B spends a lot of Energy Bars to reach the target, and he recovers a total of 8000 Energy. However, he then activates an Energy Recovery reward from the Weekly Challenge, causing his Energy recovery to raise up to 40 Energy per 6 minutes. The 75% target is recalculated, and he now has to recover 9600 Energy during the day.

Please note that:
- You can view your progress by hovering over your “Recover Energy” button
- Energy Bars and Winter Treats DO count for the progress
- The progress is always checked at day change. If your Energy Recovery changes at some point during the day, the target is recalculated and your progress changes accordingly.
- The first day the progress is counted was yesterday, Day 2,585, and the first day you can receive a higher Energy Recovery is Day 2,586

Day 2,579

Boost the Economy Days

As suggested by many of you, overproduction is an issue in the New World. We’ll try to tackle this problem and to get rid of some stacked inventory by introducing Boost the Economy Days!

Between today and the end of Day 2,582, all food and weapon consumption will be doubled.

For example, 10 Q1 food will give you 10 Energy instead of the normal 20. Also, a defeated enemy with 3 hits will decrease the durability of your weapon with 6, instead of the normal value of 3.

Please notice that:
- Bombs, Rockets and Bazookas ARE NOT affected by this change
- Energy Bars ARE NOT affected by this change

Day 2,576

- 1 Gift Pack for a Gold purchase of 4,90 Euros
- 2 Gift Packs for a Gold purchase of 9,90 Euros

- 20 Gift Packs for a Gold purchase of 99,90 Euros
- 2 Gift Packs for a Combat/War Stash or Assault/Power Pack

Gift Packs are special presents that cannot be kept. We believe that sharing is caring, so they must be given to friends!

1 Gift Pack contains:
- 2 Gold
- 10 Winter Treats
- 5 Icy Bazookas

Please note that:
- Gift Packs can be received for purchases starting Day 2,576 until the end of Day 2,598

- Icy Bazookas and Winter Treats must be used by the end of Day 2,603 (5th of January).
- Icy Bazookas deal the same amount of damage as Batzookas: 10% more damage than a Q7 weapon in Division 1, 20% more in Division 2, 30% more in Division 3 and 40% more in Division 4. The minimum damage is 10,000 in any case.
- Parts of Icy Bazookas can NOT be found on the battlefield. You can only get fully assembled weapons in Gift Packs.
- Bazooka Boosters can NOT be used with Icy Bazookas.
- Icy Bazookas will NOT be converted into regular Bazookas at the end of Day 2,603, so make sure to use them!

Medal changes

Starting Day 2,610 (12th of January), Freedom Fighter, Mercenary and True Patriot medals will award you 1,000 Currency (instead of the current value of 5 Gold).

Based on our studies, these medals didn’t reach their initial goal: to help the progress of the new players. More than this, they had a negative impact on the economic balance of the game, and with this change we aim to solve some of these issues.

We wanted to make this announcement early, so everyone will have plenty of time to prepare for this change, if needed.

Day 2,555

Article Endorsement

As you know, the media module is an important part of the New World. Articles about events of the New World, politics, unicorns and other important topics are written daily by over a hundred players. So far you’ve been able to support the authors by voting articles and subscribing to their newspapers. To give you a better chance to appreciate the “shakespeares” and “tolkiens” of the New World, you can now Endorse articles!

Endorsing an article means that you pay a nominal fee to the author to show your appreciation for his/her work. The available options are 5, 10 and 25 Currency. The whole amount goes directly to the author so no taxes are applied. You can find the “Endorse” button under the “Vote” button on the left side of the article.

The list of Endorsers will be available between the article’s content and the comment section. The Endorsers are listed based on the paid amount, and the order of Endorsements.

Please notice the following details:
- An article can be Endorsed only once by the same player
- To Endorse an article, you must be an Adult Citizen
- To Endorse an article, it can’t be older than 7 days

As a reminder, you can also publish articles globally! You can read more about that here.

Day 2,537

Dracula Rises

Citizen, be advised! The New World is in danger!

A new kind of threat has been detected, as Lana and her surveillance team has spotted Dracula moving in the outskirts of the New World. The threat is imminent and YOU will have to embark on a dangerous journey. Find Dracula, force him back to his tomb and return peace and balance to the New World!

Dracula Rises missions

- The missions are available starting Day 2,537 04:00 eRepublik time, until the end of Day 2,540.
- A Decoration can be won by completing the missions. A special kind of Decoration is earned if you’re one of the first 100 Citizens to complete them.

Batzookas

As you have noticed, fighting in battles will give you “Cursed Batzooka parts”, which you can use to assemble Batzookas. Batzookas are almost like Bazookas, except that these cursed weapons can deal a whole lot of damage!

The Batzooka will deal damage based on your Division:
- 10% more Damage than a Quality 7 weapon in Division 1
- 20% more Damage than a Quality 7 weapon in Division 2
- 30% more Damage than a Quality 7 weapon in Division 3
- 40% more Damage than a Quality 7 weapon in Division 4

- The Batzooka will never deal less than 10,000 Damage per hit
- Batzooka parts can be found from battles until the end of Day 2,540
- Batzookas can be used until the end of Day 2,542
- Bazooka Boosters are not applied to Batzookas
- Damage Boosters affect Batzookas normally

Examples:
- A player from Division 1 dealing 9,000 damage per hit with Q7 will deal a total of 10,000 damage with one hit of Batzooka
- A player from Division 1 dealing 10,000 damage per hit with Q7 will deal a total of 11,000 damage with one hit of Batzooka
- A player from Division 4 dealing 70,000 damage per hit with Q7 will deal a total of 98,000 damage with one hit of Batzooka

- After Day 2,542 23:59 eRepublik time, the remaining Batzookas and Batzooka parts will be converted into normal Bazookas and Bazooka parts.

Day 2,536

Issues during Epic Warfare

Fellow eRepublikans,

We’re sorry for the delay in posting this, but we wanted to make sure all the compensations were given accordingly. We will use this chance to explain what went wrong in the tournament, and why our reactions often seemed so slow. We’ll also talk about the compensation rewards and the issues we faced when awarding them.

Background

Over the last couple of months, we’ve done a progressive migration of all our servers from our historical provider to Amazon cloud, in order to increase the flexibility and reliability of eRepublik.com.

As the Epic Warfare tournament was being scheduled, we were aware that our current setup could not accommodate the epic load, so we migrated the critical part of the servers (database servers, cache servers and web nodes) on 10th of October with 2 hours of cumulative downtime.

By the start of the tournament, the majority of eRepublik was running on the AWS (Amazon Web Services), the avatars being an exception.

Epic Tuesday

We expected a similar load distribution over the tournament week like we had last year: load increasing during the week, as more players hit higher recovery rates. This time a vast majority of players were prepared to hit from the first minute. A significant part of them were also using client side scripts, causing a surge of load at day change.

We increased the instances to accommodate the extra load, but soon enough we hit several bottlenecks on the master database, caused by various parts of legacy code. Mainly various tables were locked by queries that were resource intensive, or should have used the slave databases. We solved the bottlenecks one by one, as we faced them.

It is worth mentioning that a critical service we are using to identified application performance issues, Newrelic.com, experienced an outage of its own on Tuesday, making our task harder.

Failing Sunday

The servers performed within parameters for the rest of the week, until Sunday. During the epic battle Serbia-Chile, the site, being under significant abuse (scripts, COs), became unusable, as it was again hitting another database bottleneck. Unfortunately, what should have taken 20-30 minutes to fix, became a 3 hour nightmare for the players. The late response was due to a mix of factors:

1) The automatic monitoring alerts were not triggered in due time, as they were not tuned for the AWS environment, but for the servers and setup we had at our previous provider.

2) A failure in the team communication; one of our QA engineers left the team last Friday and we failed to make sure that his weekend shift was covered by one of his QA colleagues. So basically there wasn’t anyone from QA “on call” during Sunday and that prevented us from catching the problem sooner.

All in all, it was a poor performance on our part and for that we would like to apologize.

Hiccup Monday

With load increasing on the site and the tournament closing, half an hour of site slowdown was experienced on Monday because of yet another set of queries.

Rewards Tuesday

As you should know by now, we decided to compensate all the problems we experienced during the tournament. The next milestone was activated for all participants, and the Energy Centers were extended with 2 days.

Unfortunately, we faced a new set of problems with the Energy Centers. It was basically a human mistake, caused by the rush of delivering the compensations. Everything should be solved by now, but if you still feel that something is wrong, don’t hesitate to send us a ticket by using the Contact page below!

Avatar Thursday

We completed the migration process to the Amazon Cloud today, finishing the move of the avatars. Changing avatars is now possible again and the players now have a better “Edit profile” section.

We still have to tweak some things, but we are confident that we’re now able to give you a better service. The kind of service the amazing and passionate community of eRepublik deserves.

The Future

We will continue to monitor and clean the application of legacy code (some of it dates back to 2008) that is prone to failure. We will also focus on our monitoring and alerting procedures, in order to improve escalation and response times.

We’re also considering some changes on the military and marketplace modules, in order to minimize the impact of the scripts in use today. We do plan to include the fight script functionality in the site, but we’re not prepared to go into details right now.

Summary

To sum it up, we’re extremely sorry for all the issues players had to face during the tournament. We were not able to deliver the experience we wanted to, and we’ll do our best to learn from these difficult times. We hope that this message gave you the much needed insight on the issues, despite it being rather technical.

Words cannot describe how much we appreciate all the passion and support you guys are showing every day. The community has kept the game going for so many years, and the whole eRepublik Team is confident that together we can make the New World a better place.
