Why New Players are the Best Players!
Gaius Julius
-Baltasar Gracian
The new player: the favorite target of every experienced player. Who hasn't taken the chance to freak out on some new player who complains that minimum wage is 1 USD? Who hasn't been frustrated by someone saying "hey why don't we attack Ireland back, we just keep letting them attack us"? Well these things frustrate me as well, but Ive also taken the time recently to consider the new player. I've come to the simple conclusion that newer players are the ultimate player. Why? Allow me to explain...
A Blank Slate
The Political Philosopher John Locke claimed that when we are born (in RL) we are a blank slate, empty of preconceived notions and bias. In eRepublik, I have come to believe that new players are in fact the perfect example of this. But wait, I'm sure many of you are thinking "that's not true, newbs bring all of their RL BS into this game". That's a good point, but most new people quickly drop these useless RL delusions. No - the pre-conceived notions I am talking about are the ones us older players carry. We learn to make decisions about others based on the past, not on their current actions. We assume that our enemies are static and will never change. Thus we lose potential chances to work together. New players on the other hand have the potential to bypass all of these problems - they are a fresh start. Everyone of them is a new opportunity to promote a bi-partisan attitude. Each one needs to be treated thus, otherwise we risk breeding another generations of trolls and flame throwers.
The Future
One day I am going to quit playing eRepublik. It may be two weeks from now (.00001% chance) or two years from now. Eventually I will go the way of Benn Dover, Sam and Nathan Woods (great man). I have put a lot of effort into not only my citizen but my country. Id like to know when I leave, this country will continue its march towards greatness. I think it's a sentiment carried by many of us eAmericans. Yet for some reason we often don't trust or believe in these new players. One day we will leave everything we have built and worked for to these people. It means that we have to remember to give these people the benefit of the doubt. Just as many great beta-giants left us a Nation to be proud of we need to cultivate people we can trust to bequeath our great enterprise to.
No where to go but up!
The eUS National Guard is an awesome service branch. Yes, the Marines are amazing tanks and the other branches are crazy sick as well. But the National Guard is awesome because its ultimate goal is unlocking the potential of the noob. People like me only have so far to go. By comparison new players have enormous potential: they are energetic and a little bit of effort towards them will mean big payoffs down the road. New players are the best because they are the most willing to jump into something new, especially if they think it's a common practice of the game. We , the older generations, need to harness this energy now more than ever. The eUS is growing in signifigance and power in the world. The constant unflux of new players, will feed our economy and our military. However it is important that we understand that these players are here and that they are a capable of so much more. Hungary did something very similar when they had their population boom, they utilized the mass of new players to overwhelm their opponents with numbers that grew in size and power with each passing day.
Here is my conclusion about the relationship between Old and New.
Old Players:
1.) WAKE UP, we were all like this at some point, I have yet to see anyone who came into this game with a complete understanding of it.
2.) Be a mentor: The mentor program does a great job helping new players, however even outside of the auspices of that program you can still help new players.
3.) Patience is a virtue: A little time taken now to explain something to a newb could mean a lot down the road.
New Players:
1.) get active, I just spent a whole article lecturing about how we need to help and accept more of you. But you to need to step up and be heard.
2.) Stay smart and informed, dedicate some time into reading up on the game and your country, it'll help in the long run.
3.) Don't expect to be spoon fed forever
Thanks guys please comment, you can also vote and subscribe, but I really want opinions!!!

Excellent thoughts Gaius. I hope everyone reads this. We were all newbs once.
Very nice article.
Well put. It is also extremely truthful.
Well written 😃
nice, voted
Completely agreed. i r still nubi.
As an oldfag, I find this highly offensive.
Contact me to sign up to be a mentor! Great article Gaius!
Very nice 🙂
I swear this game hates me at times. I just typed out a 3 paragraph comment and it failed to post.
Go Gaius!
This is really a dose of truth. I will do my best to spread this word around.
Very well written, and I agree. Then again, I should be expected to. I'm a noob myself, and I shouldn't think that I'm useless. But anyway, voted.
You're absolutely right, Gaius! We shouldn't tell new people to GTFO, we should be doing more to help them understand what is going on. Totally nailed it...well said.
You should run for President.
>I swear this game hates me at times. I just typed out a 3 paragraph comment and it failed to post
I learned a long time ago to ctrl+a, ctrl+c everything I do in eRep before pressing any buttons
how does i ran for president and kill the irish we should let uk kill them so we dont have to waste our money fighting them also what does pto mean and what does PEACE acronym stand foar?
and it seems like atlantis is still lost? i cannot found it anywhere i guess it broke again
Gaius Julius for President!
Great article. More than half of my time on eRepublik is spent in doing just what you advocate here. Education = a strong country.
Gaius, you've done it again. What an excellent article. As a new player I understood everything in this article 100%. I am like what you're describing. I've been brushing up on history and learned of Romania's domination and Germany's fall, etc. And through it all, I keep the perspective of the blank slate. My goal here in eRep is to one day help as many as I can. To learn, to grow, to make friends and eventually to promote peace and unity, regardless of what organizations or past governments have done. Thank you for giving us noobs a vote of confidence and helping to bridge the gap between newcomers and experienced players alike.
Very well stated!
Beta 4life
Very well said!
I'm a noob, and unsure on when I will graduate from that status, but this article was excellent!! Hope is opens the eyes to some of the stiff upper lipped citizens surrounding us.
Gaius Julius..The future is our childrens..🙂Voted..
perfectly stated. Something everyone should read and think about.
Well said!
Great article!
Being a mentor has been great fun for me too! It's nice to get a new player who is actively seeking knowledge of eRep.
Plus, it's better for the country as a whole to have more knowledgeable and educated citizens. Good article Gaius! Voted and sub'd long ago.
I'm alive !
i was a new player at one time an because no one liked noobs i moved around the world fighting in different wars an trying to save up i now own a company an can do about 500 damage in each battle. we all started on the ground
voted...man im the newest one here..
Nice i am new to the game and i saw this article and its like wow, this guy is right, i myself am takig the mentor program and am trying to learn as much as i can.
Good job, i am currently a new player and am doing my best to learn and take advantage of the opportunities that are before me currently, point being you have done a good job putting the reality of all the players into a short article. BRAVO!!!!!
Nice article! I am a noob myself and would have been lost had Bill (my mentor)
not come along, and I've been playing rpgs for over 15 yrs. That's what makes this game great. It's fresh and new to me. I've done my best to not ask too many questions and find answers for myself, But, when I do have questions,
everyone has been patient and kind.
"There is no spoon!"
🙂 lol
Yeah but it's much cooler to lose you temper and call them penguin bowling trolls.
Being a new player was easy for me, all I had to do was not be retarded.
voted.
I agree new players are blank slates that the experienced players use to mold the future.
mmmm spoons
I remember not too long ago when I created this account thinking "Why the hell are we just LETTING Ireland attack us" xD
I just joined e-republic and stumbled onto this articel lucky me !
I agree! Thanks for inspiring a newbie!
I are one.
Excellent, excellent post. Yet this post also bring me to realize that even at my level, I am still but a noob!
**Bastion/Gaius in July '09!**
Very nice article. So true! My first shouts were something like "Why do we keep getting attacked? Don't we have allies?" I laugh now, but I was so serious!
I totally agree with this article.
I'm still a newb \o/
couldnt be more true... the lesson, be more patient to newbs
On paper, this looks great. Then again, so do the Washington Redskins.
Most of the US's highly revered "Beta Giants" are ignorant, if not exploitative toward newer players. As with any sweeping generalization, there are numerous exceptions to that statement, but I'd say it's a 90%-10% spread.
In the past and present, it isn't worth your while to ask for help - or, god forbid - a stupid question about what is going on. The prospects of this changing in the future don't look very bright.
Then once you get angry, you get labeled a troll for getting upset and speaking out.
This will only change once the "outcasts" outnumber the "giants".
