Understanding the Political Structure

4 Day 577, 10:53 USA

Thoughts of the American Foreigner

“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” -Thomas Jefferson

I have wanted to start printing some guides to help out the new comers get a better grip of this game and maybe help some understand what is going on in the world, but have been busy lately and had to postpone. And I’ve just been plain lazy. Anyway, for the more experienced players, please vote this up for all the newcomers to see. And you newcomers can subscribe to receive articles every so often (and sometimes my insane ramblings about the going-on in the world).

Also I would encourage anyone with questions to write me and I’ll try to write back, or maybe respond in my paper. Or if you’re a more experienced player, feel free to tell stories about starting out or just some interesting history. Love to hear from you Beta Giants. But anyone with questions or just wanting to add something, feel free to chime in.

Political System

We’re going to start out with the basics of political structure. All countries in Erepublik have the same political structure. They are all Representative Republics and all countries share election days. The political system is controlled by 5 major parties in each country. Only the 5 largest political parties can put up candidates for congress and president. Smaller parties have to get the endorsement of a larger party to put up their candidates.

The top 5 parties in the United States are:
United States Workers Party
Conservative Party
Libertarian Party
America's Advancement Party
United Independents Party

Other notable parties include:
Federalist Party
Nationalist Party

Now unlike the real world the United States does not have a Federalist system. Individual states cannot pass laws regulating their own states. While representatives are based on states or regions all laws are national and affect the whole country.

One of the threats to the political system as it is now is that people can travel to different regions on the day of an election and vote and then turn right around and head home. So this led to countries using Political Takeovers (PTO) to take over a country by sending voters in to swarm the voting booth on Election Day. After taking 66% of congress they can impeach the president and the country falls under their control. Also with just 50% of congress they can pass whatever laws they want to hurt the economy and try to crash it. Citizens must be aware of who they are voting for to insure the US doesn’t fall to a PTO. Even though the US has a large population most of it is concentrated in New Jersey and Florida which leaves some states almost empty. Some elections are decided by 3 voters; easy targets for people wanting to harm America.

The Political Takeover Attempt on Spain and Other Allies

I wrote this in a previous article recounting what I remembered from my first experience with a major political takeover. This is what I wrote after watching newspaper reports coming in throughout the day.

Day 552 of the New World: A political takeover is rumored to be underway in Spain, a huge threat to the members of Atlantis as Spain holds a large amount of iron. Iron needed to produce our weapons and key to our national security. Articles start popping up detailing plans to prevent the takeover and even our President urging citizens to go cast their votes in Spain. Later on, the polls are closing and now a few reports start trickling in that South Africa is a victim of a political takeover. The polls close shortly after and the President comes out with an announcement confirming the takeover of South Africa. “South Africa was overtaken by PTO. They are impeaching the President and Indo has attacked. South Africa has 7 MPPs activated and I urge those nations to prevent Indo from overtaking South Africa.” (A Civil Society) Again, shortly thereafter, another news bulletin comes across; “Croatia has been attacked by Hungary. All US citizens and guests should fight in this battle. Fighting in Germany or South Africa really won't be helpful at this point as both nations have lost in Political Take Overs (PTOs). They are dead on their feet. So make this effort against Hungary count!”

We were in complete confusion during that day. I had no idea what was going on. Before that day I didn’t even know what a PTO was and why everyone was so concerned about it. Anyway I would like to remind you to vote this up and comment or ask any questions you may have.

“I want to say to you, Help yourself, so you can help someone else.” -James Brown

Hi...I just started playing yesterday, do you think you could go into a little more detail about how PTOs work? Do they form a new party en mass on election day and vote themselves into offices in regions all over the country? Or would they have to be longer established by holding party elections on the 15th for a party president to do something that elaborate? If they are confined to our relatively stable party apparatuses, wouldn't the Party Presidents be able to keep treasonous candidates from running no matter how many voters are flown in on election day?

Yea sure. They have quite a few options they use to pull of a successful PTO. They can create a new party or highjack another party.

The big target for PTO is congress since if you control congress you control all laws passed and may even be able to impeach the president.

Winning a party president would be the second best option to use. Take over another party and use that party's own voters in the elections. Saves them from having to import as many voters.

At the moment there is no way for Party presidents to stop someone from running in there party except by putting someone to replace them. Which sometimes can be hard if there is no one qualified to run in a region and the US has a ton of regions.

Most PTO's happen on Election Day to quickly surprise the country and leave it no time to react. The US does have an Anti-PTO unit that goes around and stops PTO's in our country and other friendly countries as well.

To view all the congress visit
<a href="http://www.erepublik.com/en/elections/country-24-election-congress-date-2009-05-region-0/1" target="_blank">http://www.erepublik.com/en/elections/co[..]-0/1</a>

It isn't broken down by state but that really isn't that important as they do very little for their state. Most don't even live in the state they run for office in.

And when election day rolls around you will be able to view all the candidates for the state/region you're in and can view a little presentation of what they believe. (if they make a presentation)

Also you can check the 'offical' shouts to see congressmen advertising their campaigns as well.
