As a matter of fact, no country "invented" the English language. It evolved from a mixture of several other languages that did not originate in England. That prolly doesn't fit too well with your Nationalistic view on things though.

And we originate from the same places the language did. You have to draw the line somewhere.

The English language has been traced back as far as a little place in Germany, that is currently as far back as it can be traced to where it was first being spoken, but it was not fluent, it was just few words mixed with other languages, when population increased and was moved about through few generations, the language became stronger, had more meaning and was being spoken like it is today.

Rawdon, Romans spoke Latin, Danes, Saxons & Angles spoke basically a Germanic Language.
Normans spoke French/Latin more or less, they were Norse people who took over a part of what is now France, but adopted the language & customs of the people they conquered.
Welsh & Britons are basically Celts - unlike in France they savagely resisted the invading Danes, Angles & Saxons & for their troubles were wiped out culturally in the areas those Germanic peoples took over (ie England)
And of course the Scots, well they came from Ireland. All those threads come together to form the language spoken in the UK. You try to read any Old English writings (eg Canterbury Tales or the Anglo Saxon Chronicles)) - and it is incomprehensible yet somehow nearly meaningful in a strange way.

Off topic sort of, out of context no. I just had to let you know that Ireland is part of the British heritage - pity Ireland was treated as a place to be exploited & not an intergral part. Now Ireland does not want to have anything to do with you lot - and IRL Scotland as well, if the talk about the referendum is to be believed

And by wanting nothing to do with the UK, they have one of the weakest economies in the EU. Ireland should have taken a hint from us Yanks and learned to embrace one of the original great capitalist nations.

All European languages have the same source (except maybe Basque & Finnish )
Proto Indo European - Greece certainly did not invent it.
The language existed before there were Greeks Latins Celts or Germans as such.

So actually what did the UK invent then - actually heaps of stuff, refer the Industrial Revolution
