The War After The War

Day 382, 22:05 Published in USA USA by NeilP99

I’m not going to argue about whether or not the war in France is a good idea. With the votes making it a mathematical fact that one will happen I really don’t see a point in that. My question is one that should be asked before any nation, in real life or eRepublik, wages a war. My question is what will happen after the war? What are the plans for the area we hope to take over? How will we ensure that any land conquered in France doesn’t become a drain on the American treasury, the American army, and the American citizens? If we can’t figure out the answers to these questions now then we will suffer immensely in the long term.

If the war that Spain is waging against France is any indication, the US should have no problems taking over whatever regions of France we agree to with our allies. The war will be the easy part in this case. Once we take that region over we face the true test. The first test will be one that may or may not happen. If PEACE collapses under the weight of a French defeat coupled with the resistance wars that it currently is fighting, and the expected wars against other PEACE countries then there will be no one to come to the rescue of a conquered France. Many experts are saying that this is likely, and from what I’ve seen and read, I have to agree. If, however, PEACE doesn’t collapse, then they will no doubt work to get France back, and there will be future wars for the US to fight in Europe.

I will continue this article under the assumption that PEACE will collapse. In this more likely situation the US will have to consider what it is going to do with the conquered French territory. Obviously the French people will not like being under the rule of another nation, especially the US. Because of this the US will be faced with two options. The first is to flood the area with American citizens so that any resistance will be drowned out by actual Americans. This is a hostile takeover where the French are stripped of most of their rights, their businesses are punished or outright eliminated, and they are kept under a tight rule by American leaders. No doubt some of you are repulsed by this idea. That is because it is completely un-American. It is the opposite of everything that America is supposed to stand for. It also will breed a hatred of the US among the French which will be hard to control. This may result in increased resistance wars against the US which will be very costly in both gold and lives.

The second option will be much cheaper in the long run, and I believe, more effective. Rather than abuse the French, we welcome them with open arms. We help them integrate into the rest of America and work to make them feel that they are better off than they were under their old government. Then, over time, we negotiate their independence under conditions that we find more acceptable. We bring them into ATLANTIS and work to make them a strong ally. If done right, this plan will strengthen US-French relations, give us another strong ally in Europe, and stimulate our economy by opening a new region to our businesses while we do hold the area. Most importantly, if we can get the French to feel that our rule over them will not be permanent and that they will get their country back then we can avoid costly resistance wars that will prevent the US from engaging in other wars, should the need arise.

Ultimately I believe the choice should be clear. But even if the President and Congress, along with our military leaders, decide the option that I would advise against, there needs to be a plan in place for after the war. If there isn’t then this could easily be one of the biggest blunders in eUSA history.
