The Resignation of the Ordinary
My name is John Blackthorne and I am going to quit Erepublik.
Now the one person who might end up reading this might ask, why, John? Why would you do such a thing? And my answer would simply be that I am tired of logging on everyday, training, working, reading every single subscription to some important person's newspaper, and then signing off until the next day. Now, this doesn't sound quite so horrible, but when this routine is repeated day, after day, after day, it begins to feel like more of a duty than a game. I have tried my hardest to be involved; I am a member of the Pony Express, Flying Unicorns, and the Mobile Infantry, and yet that is not nearly enough to keep me interested forever. I want to do somethign important, like run for congress, or involve myself in the Cabinet, or even run for president, but...
With every step I take to make myself a real member of this game, I am met with opposition.
Want to run for congress? Impossible, seeing as I have no idea what is going on in the world. I don't know what the exchange rate of USA currency is for Spanish and I certainly don't know the difference between a 1% tax for wood and 20%. I can't exactly look it up because the wiki is out of date, and nobody else bothers to answer such "noobish" questions.
Not a member of congress? Then good luck doing anything else. Pursuing a political career is out of the question if I have no experience in Congess, and even a military career is impossible to achieve without congressional experience, simply because it's impossible to distinguish yourself militarily. It's not like doing a certain amount of damage is going to improve your standings, all you need is a good quality weapon, which can be achieved simply by working a lot. So the only way to become an officer is to have experience in Congress or some other political affiliation, like a party leader (don't get me started on that).
In truth, this article is mainly one giant complaint. The only other thing this is, is my romantic hope that somehow this is going to be voted up until it is read by thousands of people, like how artists only become famous after they die. I'm pretty sure this is not going to happen.
The best I can hope, I suppose, is that one person will look at it, and actually read up to this point instead of shrugging it off because it is too long. I suppose that's all we can really hope, both in real life and in Erepublik, that we can make a difference.
This is the truth
Thank you for reading.

You can learn a lot by asking questions on IRC, most of the time you are met with an instant response.

Voted. I feel your pain, this game is a tough nut to crack. The secret seems to be that the in-roads to success are in the social aspect.
....are you still around to read this?
I, too, figured that all a person has to do is click 'run for congress' or 'start a company' and zing! Suddenly doors would fly open and all would be revealed. But that's just not the case. Just as in RL, if you want to be noticed, you have to get yourself noticed. Volunteer with the political party that whets your whistle. Network. Chat. Make friends. This is where the *real* strategy lies, not with votes or military operations; with *people*.
You're right, though. There's no guidebook that shows you how to play this game. That rattled my cage, too. But maybe... just maybe... it's because the game is what YOU make it. I still don't know about taxes and laws and congress (oh my), but what I *have* learned is that part of what makes this game so damned intriguing is that it's not actually the game that's intriguing. It's the people that play it.
The person who introduced me to the game is a member of the USWP - so, naturally, I aligned myself with them. They've been monumentally helpful and welcoming over the past couple of weeks in the USWP forums and their IRC chatroom. I'm sure other political parties have similar systems, and maybe this is their opportunity to step up and make themselves known, too.
Find someone who is willing to mentor you through the first stages. Like you, I would have quit, were it not for this "important person". You won't be president next week, or next month, but once you get in and involved with a party - regardless of which party you choose - and you start to make and help friends, you'll see the game change.
I hope you stuck around long enough to read this, and good luck!

The forums are the place to get your questions answered, and to meet some real eCitizens. If you haven't joined, your missing most of the "real" game. http://eusforum.com/ where noob questions are answered and even encouraged!
