Dear friends,

Most of you are probably expecting a jokey article, maybe with a few pictures of bots for maximum anti-admin sarcasm. But to be honest, I’ve decided to write a little article to try and motivate you not to quit, since nobody else seems to be doing it 😛

OK. So the title of this article is ‘the secret of success’, and as it suggests I’m going to tell you what my secret to success is. Longevity. Simple as that. When I was young, everyone was older than me, their deeds stretched back over a year of the game. Many of them were both in the first hundred days, making them giants by the time I was born on day 394. Everywhere around me were older, wiser players, who could use their great experience and long friendships to dance around me in debates and punish me in elections.

Over time, I came to use brute force to get my way, simply because it is the only substitute for cunning and wisdom available to the eYoung. Yes it made me a bunch of enemies, but it covered a lot of ground early and gave me a good solid reputation, which in a social game is the most important thing. However, like any sprinter, I had exhausted myself early, and was now left with a bunch of enemies like lactic acid in my blood. I couldn’t do anything further, because these enemies (whilst unable to pull me down) were able to prevent my further advancement. And so I did the only sensible thing, I stepped back into the shadows and played the game for fun.

“Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air, but only for one second without hope”

A few months after I started playing the first of my enemies quit the game. A lot of them wrote friendly things in their quit article about me. A few months after that, others slowly faded into the background, and a few of them still haunt me, but ineffectually. Later, people quit the UK to go abroad, even joining enemy alliances. Now, in the present day, the only one of my “enemies” left is Dishmcds, and we’ve been enemies so long we’re now friends. The secret to success in eRepublik is survival. The longer you, or your country, survives, the stronger and more powerful you/it becomes.

Perfect example of this is Hungary. Hungary has been booted and stomped on a few times. But like an irresistible tide, it always comes back and comes back just as strong as before. Other empires have challenged, and beaten it. But in the end those Empires fade and Hungary is still there, waiting for a sign of weakness. You might think the parallel is a false one, but it’s not. If I could list the number of citizens who suddenly thought “this two clicking is boring, but I won’t quit I’ll get more involved” and then went on to make it to the highest levels of government I would, but I’d be here all day. To be honest every one of us has at some point thought of quitting. It is a game of survival, and those games are always the most difficult to remain engaged with, but if you succeed, you win.

So don’t despair, see this as an opportunity. Sometimes the playing board becomes too crowded with pieces, it makes it hard to make your mark. See this as a levelling effect. The game has become much more balanced in v2 as well. I was a skill 14 manu worker in V1, which earned me 1g a day in wages. Now my manu skill isn’t worth beans, and I’m up to skill 6 in harvesting, which pays for Q1 food every day. I fight in battles with my Veteran/Field Marshal heli skill, and I’m beaten now and then by a skill 6 who gets lucky on the attack odds. In V1 I did over 500 damage per fight, whereas that guy would have done maybe 150. Now he can beat me. So yeah, for young players V2 is much better. You can play on a level field with the big guys.

So in conclusion, don’t give up, survive. Quitting is for losers, literally. If you need any help or support, send me a message. I’ll either hook you up with some p cool guys, or if I judge you’re better suited to the other side of the game, I’ll point you towards Dishmcds 😛

Best of luck, and hang in there,

Iain
