The Economist ~ May Day

Day 1,988, 12:55 Published in Romania United Kingdom by Spite313

Dear friends,

Tomorrow, May 1st, is May Day. For those of you living in Europe, the day may have a historic feel to it. In the UK, May Day was traditionally a day celebrating new life and the beginning of Summer. I’m not so sure about that, since it actually snowed on me a couple days ago and it was only a couple degrees celsius above freezing when I got up this morning.

However May Day is also International Workers Day and that’s the topic of this article. In the real world International Workers Day (or just May Day) is a celebration of the labour rights movement, of ordinary working people, of solidarity and of battles won. All of you out there have benefited at some point from those battles fought. Battles for fair wages, for respect, for dignity and equality in the workplace. Many of you are still fighting for rights some of us take for granted.

In eRepublik the gap between wealthy and poor is much more blasé and less hostile. These days hardly anybody even bothers with workers anymore- little of the world’s wealth is built on exploitation, unless you consider the greater exploitation of the admins. Nevertheless there is still a gap between those who have and those who don’t. It’s a gap based on timing and experience. Younger players always struggle more than older, especially those who began after the great economic depression the admins have brought upon us.

Each year I do a giveaway to celebrate May Day and hopefully right the scales of justice a little bit. This year I’m giving away food, which whilst unglamorous is nevertheless something everyone needs. In fact I am giving away 2400 health per person to the first 500 people who ask for it. I'll be donating the food from about 10.00 erep time tomorrow, so don't panic if you don't get anything tonight.

To avoid confusion, just post the word "Solidarity" in the comments to receive your food.

Iain

Ps. I don’t ask you to subscribe to my paper because of this article. If you like the other articles then fine, but this isn’t journalism it’s just a giveaway and doesn’t deserve subs. However a few votes would be nice, just so people have a chance to apply even if they’re not on my subs list.
