The Economist February 5th - Return of /v/akistan?
Spite313
Welcome to the first edition of the Economist. Over the coming months the Economist will be providing a weekly presentation of politics, economics, interviews and updates from all around the globe. For those of you not familiar with the genuine Economist's layout, the paper is divided into several sections. At the beginning are the leaders, which are leading articles pertinent to the reader. Then follow sections covering Britain, Europe, United States, the Americas, Middle East & Africa and Asia. Following this there will be an economics section, though due to the simple nature of economics in eRepublik, this will mainly consist of economic news as opposed to indicators and other stock market tools familiar to real life investors. I hope you enjoy the magazine- please subscribe. A lot of effort has gone into it's production, and hopefully in future the eponymous paper will become as subscribed as it is in real life.

Early in the morning on the fifth of February the vote on the case of a mutual protection pact (MPP) with Germany was closed, with a defeat for the pro-German camp. The final vote finished 14-9 (Y-N) after several vote changes and much debate and high drama. Since the collapse of the MPP proposal, new information has been released by both Germany and Sweden into the public sphere. Whether or not any of this is true or not this author does not feel qualified to answer. However the allegations that Germany is part of a Theocratic (/v/) conspiracy to subvert Europe are serious ones indeed, and we must consider them carefully. The threat of political takeover in the eUK remains remote, but no country in entirely safe. It is also possible that the Theocrats are acting independently from PEACE, but this makes them no less threatening, in fact quite the opposite.
“Germany is not only a puppet state, but highly unstable at that. Without PEACE backing it up electorally, there would be no way there would be any continuity politically in the country. There is no reason to ever have an MPP with Germany. Ever. Even if it ended all of it's MPPs with PEACE nations, I would still be against it. The simple fact of the matter is that Sweden is worth a lot more to us than Germany, and by supporting Germany, you're not supporting a fledgling nation's freedom, you're supporting PEACE's bid for world domination. And that's about as plain and simple as I can make it.”- Intrepid132, Minister of Foreign Affairs
One positive thing that we have gained from this experience is a greater respect for the House of Commons amongst the older citizens of the eUK. It has become obvious in recent weeks that the eUK House of Lords were exercising more influence over policy than is their remit, and often with the result of tirades by both sides becoming the staple of the news top 5. The end of the MPP debate with Germany marks an understanding from Party Leaders that the House of Commons must be defeated by the House of Commons for legitimacy to be upheld. The close vote has also forced those parties with inactive congressmen to push them into joining the forums, if only to vote down the proposal.
The question of the future of Germany is one which cannot be answered easily. It certainly won't be as simple as maintaining MPPs with PEACE. MPPs are expensive, and not just in gold but in political capital. How long PEACE decide to back Germany without the state openly declaring itself a PEACE nation is dubious. It is clear that an MPP with Germany was not the best idea, but by refusing it there is a chance we could have pushed Germany into the hands of PEACE.
Letters: Will start next week. To submit a response to be published, PM the editor.
One of the longest running bills in recent times, the Freedom of Information Act will have the effect of opening up the inner workings of Congress to the public view. In the opinion of this author, the Act has been a long time coming. It is still being passed between houses, and we eagerly await the result. The substance of the bill is that 'Sensitive' (i.e. Secret) House of Commons (HoC) debates will be released two months after the close of the debate. The debate is not centered around the principle, but rather the specifics of the motion.
One important point being debated is the issue of whether or not House off Lords (HoL) debates should be included in the general release of information. Pagan of the HoL has state
😛
“...Lords aren't elected so the public should have no right to view any info in the HoL. I will vote against for this reason.”
This writer disagrees with this point. Freedom of information is something which defines our great nation, and to exempt our second chamber merely because they are not directly elected is not a valid point. When we look at the bill as a whole, the public interest has been put first, and this must be upheld. The HoC has to be open to the public so MPs and ex-MPs can be held to account. The same must be said of the HoL. Lords must be held to account for their views- by the press if nothing else. We await the finalisation of the bill with great anticipation, and will publish any developments as and when we receive them.
A brief update here on the current housing situation. Telejornal, United Kingdom Reform Party MP for Northern Ireland has proposed a housing based NHS scheme to tackle low wellness. The scheme involves subsidising the cost of housing for active hard working citizens. The goal of this is to improve citizen wellness on a more permanent basis by providing the daily health boost of a house. Criticisms, mainly levelled by ex-Prime Minister (PM) Dishmcds are focused on the cost and effectiveness of the programme. There have been concerns that the NHS was designed to help the worst off in society (new players) and that a housing-based NHS scheme would miss that demographic altogether. However, the principle is sound and a formal way to buy government housing and then donate it back to the government has been long needed.
This week has heralded the arrival of old /v/akistan loyalists the Theocrats to Switzerland, engineering a political takeover of the small central-European state. Their stated aims are to stay out of the PEACE-ATLANTIS conflict (a common feeling in modern days) and build their ideal state on a somewhat smaller scale to their previous bid for world domination in the East. However, despite their stated aims the Theocrats have hard links to other PEACE countries in Europe and their arrival has hardly put ATLANTIS members at rest. The Swiss Press, published by pdiddy (Swiss Welfare Minister) released a plea six days ago regarding the coming Presidential elections:
“Now is the time for all of us to band together, to unite for a great cause. We must unite behind one member for the next presidential race of this great mountain country. Many of us have fought too hard in the past to loose the country now to a gang called the theocrats. While I do not know what god they think they come from, we do all know they are nothing. Just a band of Italian kids that think it is fun to ruin countries people have worked so hard for.”
One crucial thing that has come through throughout this escapade is that the Theocratic Pantheon are using the anti-ATLANTIS feelings in Switzerland to help win votes. There is no real support for joining a major alliance there, and the Swiss Presidential candidate, Billy Bob Joe, has been accused of being an ATLANTIS lackey. After today we will see whether the Theocrats are successful in their bid, or whether they will be defeated. It is this author's opinion that if it is the latter, the Theocrats will move on to another, easier victim.
One of the key issues raised in the last week in the USA has been the ongoing tax war between the USA and Spain. Spain has effectively cut of supplies of wood from the USA by raising import tax to a whopping 50%. Many U.S. Businesses had previously been taking advantage of the 1% tax to supply the Spanish market with cheap raw materials. However, in a blatant act of protectionism (which this paper stands vehemently against) the Spanish government has raised its taxes to promote Spanish medium-productivity wood businesses.
What is the U.S. response to this? Well ten days ago, before the change of tax, the USA proposed to raise Iron taxes. The motion was defeated by a huge landslide by the liberty-loving Americans. However, the vote retaken today might result in a very different count. Iron is the main export of Spain the the United States, and if the tax war is not result the USA may feel that it has to close it's import markets in direct response to the Spanish.
Protectionism is never beneficial, and it is in the best interests of not just the USA and Spain, but all of the new world that this crises is avoided at all costs. We have an over-arching military alliance, but this case in particular highlights the long-standing need for a social and economic factor to be added into agreements. Minimum tax rates and an anti-protectionist stance would help globalise the economy, which would not only help improve business everywhere, but would also lower prices for the ordinary citizen.
Although many of you may be unaware of this, Brazil is currently occupying a region of Argentina after the PEACE invasion. Since then, many Brazilians have come around to the view that a way must be found to return the conquered region. The Brazilians however are not in favour of losing a region, and so they are currently negotiating with the admins to create another region in Brazil bordering Argentina, and then retreating from Patagonia. Although this seems far fetched, the idea has been approved by the PEACE high command and is being taken seriously by Brazilian leaders. It is however facing opposition from xenophobes within the Brazilian government. One new citizen of Brazil commente
😛
“Não achei boa a idéia. Sei que estou em minoria, mas não entendo o porque de tanto medo da Argentina. Me parece que o país tem um rabo preso com aqueles putos argentinos. Eles perderam a região... problema deles. Quanto menos gringos no mundo, ainda mais sendo argentinos, melhor!”
(English translation: I don't think it's a good idea. I don't know why everyone is so frightened of Argentina. It seems to me that we have them by the tail (rough translation!). They lost the region... it's their problem. The less foreigners in the world, especially Argentinians, the better!)
Let's hope that Atlantis and Peace negotiate a lasting peace between the countries. Argentina has become almost inactive since they lost the war, and it would be a shame for Atlantis' legacy in the Americas to be one of failure and regret.
The middle-east in eRepublik is home to a rising superpower and a dying one. Iran and Pakistan are of course the countries in question. However, the Empire of Turkey is often forgotten when it comes to the region, and yet they are a nation whose imperialism has affected Europe more than any other. Dreams of freedom from Turkish oppression are often voiced by Israeli and Greek freedom fighters, as well as freedom-loving people everywhere. But what is being done by the world to solve this perennial problem?
Moshe Dayan, eternal freedom fighter extraordinaire, has been fighting in the freedom corner for so long that he puts all else to shame. His most recent article lays down the gauntlet to the Turkish, threatening them with a stark choice: Israeli and Greek freedom and war. The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) is growing each day and the Greek Liberation army is also growing. Moshe suggests that Greece and Israel buy back some regions for gold so there is a homeland for Israeli's and Greeks. Then the three nations would sign MPPs and agree to support one another in times of hardship.
The odds of this convincing the Turks is slim however. As is pointed out in the article, anti-semitism, xenophobia and a lack of democracy are all things Israeli's and Greeks have had to suffer over recent months. The general feeling in Turkey is that the only way the Israeli regions would be freed is into the hands of a new Palestinian state.
One thing we need to remember is that Real Life and eRepublik are intended to be different. Let's not make the same mistakes here that are made in the real world.
Korea has faced a number of invasions and crises over the years, but the invasion of US traitor Teacher is possibly the worst of recent times. The Embargo was presumably intended to prevent the criminal using the US treasury to his advantage. As it is, the embargo was unnecessary, as it turns out from an interview by Ben Door that he distributed the gold before he ever left the USA. What happens now is unclear, but I would imagine that Korea and it's newest inhabitant are going to be very unpopular in Atlantis for a while now.
Business News – Inflation hits the NHS
The steady rise of the cost of Q1 gifts has finally hit the NHS. With gifts now retailing at £2.00 there is a 33% rise in costs for local directors. Some clinics have frozen NHS treatment altogether, leaving dozens of citizens in the lurch. As it is, the eUK desperately needs an influx of cheap raw materials. The government is currently helping new players to set up businesses abroad to export cheap materials to the eUK.

In name of Brazilian citizens - even I'm not being part of the Brazilian Government - I would like to express my abhorrence about that quoted sentence of a brazilian. That stupid xenophobes are REALLY minority and they don't have even a chair in Congress.
Brazil wants to create another region to use it in Plano PAÍS (wellness program).
argentina isnt ATLANTIS member a long time, my friend....ATLANTIS already failed, there, again.
Oh, yeah, I forgot. Argentina entered PEACE few days ago. Update yourself. Furthermore, great article. Voted.
Broad and Informative. Thank you! Voted and Subscribed.
Awesome. Like the format. Voted.
If anyone would like to respond formally PM me your letter and it will be published in the next edition.
Good article. I hope it lives up to its namesake in the long run. Voted.
Good article but a bit wordy for my small brain.
That was the best first article ever! A word of advice, you don't have to try so hard.
It isn't the first article I've ever written, but it is the first edition of the Economist.
Although I don't agree with all of your views, I have subscribed to this Newspaper. I hope to see more of this.
A good article and a nice prospect of an eversion of my favourite news publication
'The HoC has to be open to the public so MPs and ex-MPs can be held to account. The same must be said of the HoL. Lords must be held to account for their views
I agree that congressmen should be held to account because the people have spent their votes on them and may want to do so again in the future and their behaviour in a serious conversation may influence that decision. However, the lords are not elected and are in a sense independent (none of us vote on a party line in the HoL and never have done) and have no obligation to the public - they are merely advising government on legislation. The public don't need to know what the Lords do because they can't influence their selection anyway.
With all due respect, the argument that Germany is currently affiliated with the Theocrats and /v/akistanis in Switzerland is completely bogus fearmongering and yellow journalism. I ask anyone that proposes this argument to provide concrete evidence.
Widdows - the Lords in the UK are still accountable to the people, and the HoL can be abolished or reformed in the same way as it was made- by the commons. Since MPs are there to represent their constituents, if public opinion was in favour of one of those options they would have to consider it. So the Lords is indirectly affected by public opinion. The statement:
I have no obligation to the public
is unlikely to endear you to them. If you have nothing to hide, then the debates should be released to allow the public to form an accurate opinion on the value of the Lords.
Justin - I said that they were allegations, not truth. The connection was presumably relating to the presence of former /v/akistani members in both countries.
Both of you- I reiterate that your views can be published in the next edition if you care to write a letter.
HoL should be accountable even more so since they are not elected.
Congressmen and Government should act on the will of the people, that's a fundamental part of democracy. If the House of Lords is advising Government based on that notion of acting in the public interest, then ultimately the public should know. After all if the Lords opinion is different from the general public feeling, the public need to know this in order to make the case to the commons to disregard the Lords.
If the Lords doesn't act in the public interest, then forget whether information should be released or not, it shouldn't exist.
Any body that advises our Government should be doing so in the interests of the public, if they're not, they shouldn't exist, if they are, then the public needs to know.
The idea that any body who advises our Government should be exempt from providing the people of this country with the advise they've given, I think is frankly absurd.
And any Lords who think otherwise need to re-evaluate their position, because my question is, if you're acting in the public interest, which you should be; how do you think it is in the interests of the UK and her democracy to not inform the citizens of the UK of the advice you've given?
Good article
Very good article, and some very interesting points raised
I'm glad to get this perspective into world politics.
>>The connection was presumably relating to the presence of former /v/akistani members in both countries.
I'm from /v/akistan, does that make eUK part of it?
As I said, they were allegations. Not by the Economist. We report the news, we don't make it.
Very good. Nice to see more serious journalists 🙂
A brilliant article, best I've seen on here. Real newspaper standard.
And I'm talking broadsheet, baby.
The second UK media that i subscribed (the first is Kaleb's). Good jobe, mate
