The Case for War

Day 1,132, 06:12 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Hard Logic
"We want to glorify war — the only cure for the world — militarism, patriotism, the destructive gesture of the anarchists, the beautiful ideas which kill"

These words come from The Futurist Manifesto, written over 100 years ago by a group of Italian artists. Although their ideas fitted poorly in world about to endure the First World War, they apply rather well in the current realm of eRepbulik.

We find ourselves in a current lull, with the North Americans driven off, and Ireland recently subjugated. Unfortunately, in eRepbulik, a lull is inactivity, and inactivity is death. War drives our economy and gameplay: but the war must be engaging, interesting to the citizenry enough to inspire them to buy food and weapons, and to keep playing what is otherwise a rather dull game. I warn you that it is not only enjoyable to go to war, but it essential that we do so as quickly and as aggressively as possible.

So why are we not already arming ourselves and preparing to invade? With the attack cost removed, and the cost of declaring war avoided by the Natural Enemy rule, it cannot be simply a monetary matter. The reasons are several, but here are two which I consider most important:

Firstly, the executive of the United Kingdom has no, and with a few notable exceptions has never had any love for war. And why should they? It is probably the most stressful task a government can come across. It is expensive, it is dangerous, and if it all goes wrong they will be lynched. They point out that we can simply fight for our allies through our network of Mutual-Protection Pacts. "Lucky us!" you all surely react to this. We get to fight in the interminable, unending cycle of war in eastern Europe and the Balkans, which will never end and will never change. Or even better, help Argentina fight Chile for the Southern Lower Amazon! How exciting!

Secondly, there is no current consensus on who we should make our enemy of choice, or indeed that we should go to war. This is what this article seeks to rectify

Maddog Jones has already argued that we should attack Belgium. He is wrong.

He argues that Belgium would be easily held as it is surrounded by allies. Sadly, he is mistaken

As you can clearly see, Germany is occupied by Poland, and thus, Poland borders Belgium. Were we successful in our occupation, it would be a matter of days before the Eastern Europeans declared us their natural enemy and drove us off the continent, facing us with the prospect of a Polish invasion. Almost exactly a year after the last one.

He also tells us that Belgium is a clear enemy, who tanks against us, and were invaded would somehow cease to be a threat. He is wrong. Belgium is still, largely, a neutral country (despite his the acts of its President). We already are neighboured by no less than six sworn enemies; can we really afford to add another to that list? Not to mention the oft-repeated warning that it would damage our relationship with France. And even if they are plotting against us, their impact is so negligible, so unimportant, it better to let them wither and die of their own inactivity rather than stir them up with war.

There are, however, two extremely viable, deserving and exciting targets within striking distance. Sweden and Canada.

Canada is perhaps our most persistent and arrogant foe. Over the past year, they have invaded us with success three times. Their success was born not from military might, but through simple exploitation of former weaknesses in the Military module, or through mysterious reserves of gold. Yet they have been allowed to go almost completely unpunished.

Is it because they are too strong? Our leaders would have us believe that were we to attack Canada, the United States would rush to their aid, facing us with another invasion. However, across the channel we see our long-standing and gallant allies, the French, driving deep into Canadian territory without any response. Why are we not aiding them in this quest? There are resources and vengeance at stake here, and it is a combination of laziness and cowardice that stops us seizing the opportunity.

Sweden is a country we have not battled for many months, but do not forget that they too invaded us in January of this year, and have also survived unpunished. But the main cause of war with Sweden would be a nobler one than revenge: Liberation

Sweden has for many weeks occupied the north of our German allies, who are currently reduced to just one region. Although they are a strong nation for their size, and the war would not be easy, there is a possibility for our nation to attack Sweden through also-occupied Denmark. Should we find success in battling Scandinavians, we would also be put in a position to attack the Swedish homeland, opening the way to more resources, as well as a good opportunity for war and conquest against the relatively weak nations of Finland and Norway.

So what is the summary of this article for those of you who found it too boring to read (I don't blame you)? Attack Sweden, or attack Canada. But whatever you do, do it soon.
