STEREOTYPING in eRepublik

LORD OF THE FLIES.

THIS ARTICLE IS A RESPONSE TO THE ARTICLE FROM ARJAY PHOENICIAN. HE MADE AN EXCELLENT COMPARISON WITH THE STORY “LORDS OF THE FLIES “AND LIVING A LIFE IN EREPUBLIK. HE COMPARED THE ACTIONS OF THE ECITIZENS BY DIVIDING THEM IN TO TWO TYPES OF BEINGS. THE RALPHS AND THE JACKS. RALPHS ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF SOCIAL ORDER, ACTING WITHIN A CODE OF ETHICS, AND TRYING TO ESTABLISH DISCIPLINE AMONG THE BOYS/ECITIZENS, WHILE JACKS REPRESENTS UNBRIDLED FREEDOM, SEEKING TO ESTABLISH A NEW ORDER NOT HELD TOGETHER BY THE RESTRAINTS OF CIVILIZED CONVENTION.( Lord of the Flies and eRepublik, day 1123, Grain of Sand)http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/lord-of-the-flies-and-erepublik-1606685/1/20

STEREOTYPING .

Like in all societies there is a lot of stereotyping going on in that story. If you look at the story from the beginning you get your stereotypes as you do in the real world and in the eWorld. Piggy stereotypes Ralph and Ralph stereotypes Jack.
Arjay Phoenician, although I can identify with the Ralphs of this eWorld I am aware of the fact that this would be giving in to stereotyping.

Stereotyping helps us out in our everyday lives. It helps us make generalizations about people this is not necessarily a good or bad deal. It is good in that it helps us keep things sorted out in our minds. It also helps us to act in a proper way around different kinds of people according to social norms. Stereotyping can also create a negative affecting that; it can create wrong impressions about people. It can lead to unfair or bias opinions about a certain groups or types of people. Stereotyping is a big part of everyone’s day-to-day life. When people enlist in ERepublik they are going to instantly make assumptions. And make decision that are steered by their unconscious How progressive a person seems to be on the surface bears little or no relation to how prejudiced he or she is on an unconscious level.

We could call it unconscious bias!! We all use stereotypes, all the time, without knowing it. We have met the enemy of equality, and the enemy is us. Does it help to make people aware of that?
YES, because there is still hope! We aren't completely under the sway of our unconscious. Scientists think that the automatic activation of a stereotype is immediately followed by a conscious check on unacceptable thoughts--at least in people who think that they are not prejudiced. This internal censor successfully restrains overtly biased responses..
With this said I like to think that we can make a difference. Arjay Phoenician wrote: Just know, if you do know Lord of the Flies, if you do see this game as I do, and you do see yourself as Ralph, being hounded by the trolls that seek either your silence or your resignation for your willingness to stand up for what you believe to be right, you’re not alone. There aren’t a lot of us here, but we are here, it’s a matter of looking for us. I’ve found several Ralph’s here, and we fight the honorable fights and confide in one another, no matter what is slung upon us. Maybe we can’t save the world from its own shortcomings, but we can save each other.

Knowing that stereotypes are not the product of individual cognitive activity alone, but are also social and collective products which function ideologically by justifying and legitimizing existing social and power relations within a society, we can use the propaganda and the tools that have been offered to us we can make people aware of their unconscious bias and let them think about it. I am too young to this eWorld to have known about this world tribe. It must have been glorious to have a group of people who I could identify with but that would mean I gave in to the unconscious impulse of stereotyping. I think it is best we write these articles to make people aware of their own behaviour. Beat the trolls at their own game so to speak.
