Royal Writers: Resisting the Ruin of Reflection

Day 1,923, 14:22 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Mr Woldy

The Royal Writers

This week, the issue of vote buying in the media has begun to bubble over into a debate, as people’s increasing frustration/annoyance at it approaches boiling point.

One side, the ‘pro’ arguers (and somewhat ironically; the less visible of the two sides) assert that vote buying is just a political strategy-come-innovation and have framed it as a natural development of party political rivalries. On the other side of the coin, the anti-vote debaters generally argue that it seems underhanded, and misconstrues representations of public opinion.

Obviously, the Royal Writers was started in opposition to shameless vote buying, so there is very little I can say in support of its defense, and in fact all I can really do is highlight how dangerous it is to accept the ‘pro’-lobbyists argument; if, as the main expositors of vote buying say, it is not just a normal political strategy but one which they think other parties should do too, then the media will simply be dominated by even more mindless tat. With 6+ parties all aiming for media dominance, there will be literally no room for independent writers and thinkers to be heard, and, if you also consider the fact that government newspapers will have to compete to be seen, the prospects of a self-encouraging and popular media module within the eUK virtually disappears.

In other words, what will the point in writing be if the media is dominated continuously (as proposed by the pro-group) by party political papers, and what individual will aim to compete with them? The media module will die. The voice of the little guy will vanish, and government articles will become even less visible.

Of course, as I have mentioned elsewhere the ultimate irony in the ‘normalisation’ of vote buying, which is what it is, is that those parties who choose to dominate the media squash out the voice of the little guy into irrelevance, and it is that little guy which said parties claim to represent.

If they wanted to represent them, they would encourage, not discourage that voice, and they wouldn’t push the government/philanthropic articles aimed at helping them into irrelevance by vote buying either.

It is in light of that vein of thought that this weeks first Royal Writer award goes to Rory Winterbourne, for his ’Anti Voters Club’. Rory here explains how ‘branding’ vote buyers will hopefully devalue the popularity and worth which vote buyers con people into thinking they have. I myself feel that encouraging those who choose to buy votes to ‘fess up in their articles will dispel any accusations of subversion, but quite who willing people are to do that in unclear.

Secondly, and in an equally system-smashing style, is Alexander Solari, for his ’FOR SALE: Principles, Barely Used. Alexander has written a piece on party bribery which is well worth reading.

Next is a duo of guides, starting with Talon Karrde’s Political Power in Political Parties’ explaining how you can enter the world of politics, though it is worth noting these techniques of course apply to all parties, not solely the UP.

Followed by Kravenn, who is celebrating his new player guide being voted the best guide in the entire game by the admins. For more on that, read ’How I helped the eUK’. And a big pat on the back for him.

Followed by John Baker, who has embarked on an interesting project which I will be paying close attention to, if you haven’t already seen it be sure to read, ’Presenting: An Oldfaggishly Cultural History of the British Electronic Empire. Which also earns bonus points for ‘long title of the week’.

Lastly, we have Horice’s exposé on the TUP Family winning this weeks satire award, which you can read here: History of the TUP Family.

Furthermore, this weeks publication of the week is the New Reformer, by Alexander Solari; mainly as he is very new, but that hasn’t deterred him and he has got stuck right into a one-man fight for justice. I like his spunk.

Well done to the winners, cash is on your way!

Royal Quiz-Night

I would also like to mention that the Royal Quiz is making a stomping return this wednesday, if you don’t remember then, well you probably weren’t there BECAUSE if you were there, you would remember.

The quiz takes place on IRC, and we request that people sign up in teams of no more than 5, with approximately 5 rounds of ten points each on a diverse range of topics both real wordly and e. They are great fun, so if you are free this wednesday swing by to #eWoldy ont he rizon server at 9PM GMT, and have a giggle.
