Reflecting on Recent Events

Day 2,842, 16:40 Published in Canada Canada by Xichael

Things have taken a turn for the worst here recently. As you may have noticed, I set CAF to fight for the dictatorship. This was my payment to Rylde for some 100k+ CO money to fight Germany in the opening battle a couple months ago after thumping Italy. Without that money we may have lost the war and the Netherlands would have been occupied again after we just freed it at great expense. Rylde came up with the money in the early rounds and in exchange I had to promise to support him when he tried to coup again. I made a deal with the devil to secure victory and today he collected on his debt. I am a man of my word and the debt was paid in full.

However, this whole situation has made me start to reflect on this game. Honestly, it's no longer fun anymore. The last month has been a constant shitshow and both sides have been busy hurling venom at the other. I don't mind people like Xander, who are clearly role playing, but the vast majority of venom spewers are personally invested in their attacks. There are people like this on both sides, and I won't name names, but they know who they are. When I thought of the idea of dictatorship, I had an idea it could be fun. Last time, I even made a new banner for the MoD glorifying the eternal leader and was looking forward to playing the role of a member of the Military Council Rylde had formed. However, it's just not fun, because people take things done in this game very personally. Even for role playing and not breaking any rules of the game, you can face hostility on a personal level. It's not uncommon for people to bring up RL during such arguments (such as bringing up someones family life). I know this isn't something that is unique to eRepublik, but eRepublik is the game I invest the most time and energy in and the hostility becomes stressful. It doesn't help that I try to be an appeaser and often find myself in the middle of ugly disputes with both sides vying for my support.

For this reason, I think i'm going to start winding down my energy investment in eRepublik. I'm preparing my application for law school, which is a stressful enough time and I don't need to be dealing with all the hatred being thrown around here. I will still two-click at least and I won't be able to stop myself from doing a few things, like running the NCSP and the CAF (if i'm not voted out by the Military Advisory Council in the next few days), but i'm going to try and become less involved in politics. I already agreed to help out with Orion this month, but I plan to not get involved in partisan activities if I can help it.

The heated debates and discussions can be interesting at times, but these days they are always taken to the personal level. I think we need to step back a bit and really think about what we want from this game. Hatred and stress is not something I want or need and I think other people should start considering this as well.

Here's hoping for a more positive future,
Xichael
