Policy of Truth

There are nations in this world that were gifted with wealth. Some need only stretch their hands, bat an eyelash, or blink an eye for glory to come to them. Notice how China and the USA can sit on their hands, growing fatter from the richness of their ample and abundant resources? Notice how they have plenty within their borders in addition to the manpower to comfortably take that which lies beyond, and thus enjoy the fruits of a bountiful economy?

If only we could all be so fortunate!

Indeed, what have we in our own small, but proud, nation? When I look at our resources, what do I see? I must tell you the honest and inexorable truth: I see poverty. No rubber for our tires; no saltpeter for our gun-makers; no oil for our tanks; no iron for our steel industry; no cattle for our butchers; no grain for our poor and starving. What a pitiful state we Japanese live in! But is our fate sealed? Are we destined for eternal poverty and cruel affliction?

No, that need not be our fate.

Let us look at what we do have: beautiful, glittering aluminum, teeming fish, sweet fruit, and bountiful deer. All in all, based entirely on what the kami have lent us on these lands, we have a 15% bonus to our food production. This is nothing to sneer at.

But we can do better.

Across a mere lake's worth of distance is a small island that few seemed to have noticed here in the Land of the Rising Sun. Maybe the sun was in our eyes. This island is called Jeju, and it has the grain to give our food industry a gentle but significant push.

Japan, I am making this island my most beloved interest. I shall lay forth a motto I will pursue for months to come: Jeju is Japan.

Our fate is at one with the will in our hearts. We do not need to be resigned to poverty and cruel neglect forever. We do not need to suffer this universal indifference. We have the means, now if only we had the will to do what was necessary. Japan, Jeju is ours for the taking.
