My Never Ending Campaign.

19 Day 676, 21:00 Austria
Presidential elections are a little over a week away, besides myself there are two candidates, Wilhelm von Germania, and Cratia_man, more prominent candidates are sure to be on the way, there isn't much more I can say to let you in on my plans for the country, I will focus primarily inwardly, foreign policy is not a major platform for me, as such I will rely heavily on an adviser for relations with outside countries.

My one stance on foreign relations will be the establishment of the Austrian Foreign Legion, a group that will function like many armies around the world, with government funded moving tickets, and weapons, and potentially gifts (under consideration) the only real difference is that it will consist of citizens from other countries that swear loyalty to us, and will come to our defense if we need it, that way we can defend ourselves, but there won't be the potential for us to become an aggressive nation.

Economically, I'd like to think I'm conservative, I don't intend to manipulate the ATS, just letting it ride its current path, letting it get stronger. Rjeddings will be my Minister of Finance, and will watch the market closely for me. My own personal addition to the economy is my weapon company, I pay the highest wages in my experience levels, helping new players get established more easily.

I'd like to establish a Ministry of Culture too, someone whose sole focus is to take the current citizens of Austria, and the new immigrants, and merge them into one healthy blend of Austrian, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Immigration will be tightly integrated, and will work together.

My number one goal is to open the doors to the government wide open, let some light in, I don't intend to keep any secrets. To assist me in this manner Rangely will be my press agent, sitting in on all cabinet meetings, and reporting the goings on there, and speaking of cabinet, each and every party president will be offered an advisory role so everyone will have some say in how things are run.

Congressional reform will also be a big deal for me, I'd like to set up guidelines regarding leaving congress, and bogus proposals, I know I'm not the only one that would like to do that though.

Lastly I'd like to apologize for the inflammatory remarks I made in an earlier paper, I unjustly attacked the IA as a whole, I really only meant to go after a few of their top leaders, which might not be better, but I do want everyone to know that I don't have a problem with IA in general, I'm just fed up with the secretive boys club that seems to roost in the upper balcony of the party.

I am open to questions, if you'd like to know what I'd do in any particular situation just ask, and I will give my best response.

Thank you,
Nykoal.

Question; Do you plan to work with any of those 'top leaders' that you hate?

Also; Anymore Cabinet members or just the three?

Sorry I'm not a voter, just curious.

My cabinet will be Finance, Culture, Immigration, and Defense/Foreign Affairs, and each of the party presidents.

Even parties that I disagree with, if Metallon or Olorum were to become party presidents I'd take them on as advisers, its not about what I want seriously, its about the country, and having them on would give me a more balanced view of whats best.

Good luck. It would be nice to see one of "the people" elected instead of one of "the ruling elite."

Personally, I approve of everything but the Foreign Legion's setup. Auxiliary armies (ones under the command of other national authorities) can prove unreliable at best and are no substitute for one's own troops. I understand that our population cannot support a large fighting force, but I'd just like to reconsider the notion of relying heavily in foreign policy on soldiers whose loyalties ultimately lie outside this country.

Otherwise, looks like exactly the medicine the polity needs to become efficient and accountable to the people. I approve.

Well Piratbox, the Foreign Legion will be for dire emergencies only, if we're being attacked, also having conscripts around the world would improve our image, just by the soldiers that join, and word of mouth could greatly increase immigration.

The problem with this Foreign Legion for defense stuff is that if we're attacked by any of our neighbors, PEACE will rush to Austria's aid anyhow. The scenario I can think of when we would need a Foreign Legion because PEACE is busy is when America takes Western Europe, which, trust me, won't happen soon. Once it happens, no such foreign legion will be good enough to stop the invasion. If a slightly stronger one of our neighbors attacks us and PEACE somehow isn't helping, this kind of Foreign Legion wouldn't have much of an impact.

Let's say Slovenia attacked us and somehow PEACE is unwilling to help. They have 750 citizens and we can expect that 250 or so soldiers will rush to our aid during the Foreign Legion offer.

It is most likely that around half of these are experienced and well trained, with 7 strength or higher. However, this wouldn't make much of a difference because during the first initial Slovenian Blitzkrieg stages, Styria, the hospital would be taken. Our 'Foreign Legion' would be able to hold stalemate, but would negatively effect the Austrian economy so much that we would be econscrewed to death.

We don't need to worry about Slovenia much, though, as they are another PEACE nation. The only plausible threat as of now comes from Croatia. But if Croatia attacked us, and PEACE won't help, the foreign legion won't make the slightest of a difference against 11,000 Croatians.

Its easy to criticize, but alternatives are slow to come to mind, currently if we're attacked and PEACE decides to not help then we're totally screwed, we need some kind of plan, and I feel that the Foreign Legion will give us a significant lead in not being eaten alive, the Legion will work twofold, we'll have a reliable supply of defense(I don't see us needing them though), and we will have increased goodwill in nations our legionnaires reside, just for their attachment to us(we may be able to garner political support)

We're lacking somewhat in valuable targets for our enemies, but I can see how our diminutive population is contributing to some fears. I still find a few elements questionable, however:

1. Depending on the pool of recruits we would draw the legion from, they could be as flaky as you're suggesting PEACE might be. If they're from PEACE nations currently engaged, they may have obligations outside of our influence. They could be affiliated with our attackers. And finally, they're only as good as the gold we give them. Should we run low while fighting, they will desert, leaving us with little but a delayed defeat and extra gold missing from the coffers.
2. It diverts attention from key efforts to get players to contribute in all facets of society, i.e. immigrating and becoming a citizen of Austria. While the new policy may attract attention, people will notice that privilege is granted to outsiders while those devoted to Austria pay.
3. Domestic arms price is slightly overvalued, and importing (legally) would be pricey. Would the government have to eat the cost, or would you be leading the private sector in improving productivity in the weapons sector? If the latter, could we not make the boom in the weapons industry a pretext for bringing in naturalized citizens to work, purchase, and fight?

Reviewing this and thinking about it further, now I have to say I jumped the gun--I'm not so sure about much of this. I still like the government transparency, if it works and doesn't endanger national security, but not so sure about most of the other proposals.

I still like the foreign legion idea. As long as Austria isnt at war with a member's country I don't see why they wouldn't help. I would be willing to sign up and willing to fight against anyone but Greece. My allegiance is in my word and to Greece only. Having members from the opposite side that are willing to protect a PEACE nation would be a benefit politically.

The only reason I wouldn't aid the foreign legion is if i didn't have enough money for a ticket or if Greece were under attack. Since this seems to assume giving tickets to members who are coming to your aid, that solves half of the problem.

The other half is just making sure you have plenty of soldiers from many different nations and different creeds so that conflicts of interests can be allowed for and you still get an effective fighting force out of the ones who do answer the call.

I'm new here so maybe there are problems that I dont see that poke holes all in my ideas, but I seriously don't see them.
