MALBATT Involvement in Black Hawk Down Rescue Mission

The history begun...

On October 4, 1993 MALBATT (Malaysian Battalion) was placed in a immediate standby mode at 1755 hours, shortly after being informed that they will participate in a rescue mission in the east of Bakara Market. Half an hour later, UNOSOM II Headquarters contacted Lt. Col. Mohd. Rozi asking that MALBATT provides additional company for the rescue mission.

Approximately at 1845 hours, Company A, 19th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) has arrived at New Port. At that time, Operations Officer Major Mohd. Arif Shafi and Company B, 19th RAMD were already there. The members of the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division Task Force, U.S. Army arrived approximately at 2100 hours, while the QRF Commander Col. Lawrence E. Casper arrived half an hour later.

After some discussion, Commander QRF ordered all MALBATT infantry support members in the APC will be replaced with by the member of the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment. Only the MALBATT officers, the chief vehicle, the rear gunner, driver and radio technician maintained in each APC to facilitate communication. A total of 11 officers and 102 other ranks personnel (LLP) were involved in this operation. The remaining 134 members were ordered to return to Mogadishu Airport Camp. The commandos of the 11th Regiment Special Forces are also involved in the rescue Super 6-1 helicopter crew.
